RADFORD SCHEDULES TOUGH FOES

Radford University released its 1996-97 men's basketball schedule Wednesday, a slate that in some circles is considered its most attractive and challenging ever.

Home games with Virginia Commonwealth, Richmond, Marshall, and VMI, and visits to Virginia, Georgia Tech, Evansville, Ohio University and East Tennessee State highlight the schedule.

``This is the kind of schedule we've been working toward for the last five years here and we do not intend to use it as an excuse,'' Radford coach Ron Bradley said. ``We have recruited the type of players who will be able to play this type of schedule, so no excuses. Just do it.''

Nov. 13 - Croation Nationals; 18 -Mid South AAU; 24 - at Evansville; 26 - at Tennessee-Martin; 29 - at Georgia Tech

PREPS Archer

leads Salem to title

* In a dominating performance, Salem's Jill Archer did not lose a game, whipping Kate Brown of Jefferson Forest 6-0, 6-0 to win the singles title at the Region III girls' tennis tournament at Salem High School.

Archer also combined with teammate Betsy Hall to win the doubles title. Archer and Hall knocked off Stacey Roberson and Carey Schneeweiss of Jefferson Forest 6-3, 6-2.

In the team competition, Salem won all six singles matches to defeat Martinsville 6-3. Both Salem and Martinsville advance to the Group AA tournament next week.

* George Demasters scored a goal three minutes into the second half to break a tie and send Salem to a 3-1 victory over Jefferson Forest in a Region III boys' soccer semifinal at Forest.

Salem (13-3) plays for the championship Friday against William Byrd, a 4-0 winner over Nelson County in the other semifinal. The Spartans also got goals from Brady Warr and Matt Oehlschlaeger.

Michael Berry scored a goal and added two assists in the Terriers' win.

earn lacrosse honors

* Four Virginia players were named to the Brine/Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association All-America team.

Senior goalie Michelle Cusimano, the Cavaliers' all-time saves leader, was named to the first team for the second consecutive year.

Senior attacker Kate Evans and sophomore defender Kara Ariza made the second team and senior midfielder Heather Hotchkiss made third team.

* The Salem Rotary and Old Dominion Athletic Conference have agreed to a four-year contract extension for the club's continued sponsorship of the annual men's and women's basketball tournament at the Salem Civic Center.

The extension runs through the the 2000 tournaments. The ODAC tournaments are a fund-raising function for the Rotary, which began its relation with the Salem-based Division III league in 1980.
