PH FALLS IN SUDDEN DEATH

Any high school student vaguely familiar with American history knows that given an option, Patrick Henry would rather not choose sudden death.

But when both teams are nicknamed the Patriots, somebody has to make a concession.

Patrick Henry girls' soccer team lost to Albemarle 2-1 in overtime in the Northwest Region semifinals held at Cave Spring Junior High School on Wednesday night. Albemarle advances to the regional finals to be played Friday against the Garfield-Hylton winner.

Patrick Henry finished the season 15-2, as both losses came to Albemarle by the same score. Albemarle improved its record to 12-4-1.

Albemarle junior Kelley McGrath took an assist from senior Diana Bodily and beat PH goalkeeper Carolyn Hodges in front of the net for the winning goal with less than two minutes to play in the third overtime period.

``We were all going for the ball,'' Hodges said. ``I dove for it, but I just wasn't fast enough.'' Hodges' teammate Margaret Hunter Turner desperately attempted to beat the ball to the goal line, but came up just short.

``It was a sickening feeling to watch that ball cross the line,'' Turner said.

PH took the first-half lead when sophomore Christen Pendleton booted a left-footed kick past Albemarle keeper Erin Ewing into the left corner of the net. Anni Eure was credited with an assist.

Albemarle dominated the second half, tying the score on an unassited Bodily goal at the 19:19 mark. The visitors maintained a steady pressure, but did not seriously threaten again in regulation.
