EX-REDSKIN CLARK IS HOST FOR BENEFIT

All-Pro NFL wide receiver Gary Clark will serve as host for ``Unite'' `96, a benefit dinner and auction June 1 honoring Geoffrey Pelton at the Sheraton Inn Roanoke Airport.

Pelton, who was a youth leader at Clark's ``Why Say No'' Sports Camps, was killed by a drunk driver May 16, 1993. The dinner begins at 7 p.m., with the auction immediately following.

Proceeds will benefit the sports camp and the Geoffrey Pelton Scholarship Fund. Tickets start at $35.

Five-time Super Bowl champion Charles Haley, an alumnus of James Madison University, is co-host for the event.

Clark, who was a member of the Washington Redskins for eight years, will hold one of his sports camps July 7-13 at Radford University. The co-ed camp is open to youth ages 8 to 16.

COLLEGES Fitch fails to qualify for finals

Roanoke College's Courtney Fitch came up short Thursday in his third appearance at the NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships in Naperville, Ill.

Fitch, who finished sixth last year as a sophomore in the high jump, cleared 6 feet, 51/4 inches. But he could not overcome rainy conditions, slipping on his last attempt at 6-71/4 and failing to qualify for Saturday's finals. Fitch had not competed since April 13, when he cleared 6-113/4 during a meet at Duke University, because of an injury to his left heel.

Washington and Lee's Josephine Schaeffer finished 11th in the women's 10,000-meter run late Wednesday night and was scheduled to run in the 5,000 on Thursday night.

Virginia Tech men's tennis player Oliver Mayo advanced to the third round of the NCAA Championships in Athens, Ga.

Mayo defeated Kentucky's Cedric Kaufmann 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 in the second round. He advances to today's third round, where he will face Harvard's Tom Blake.

UVa women's tennis players Alison Cohen and Jen Fiers lost first-round matches Wednesday at the NCAA Championships in Tallahassee, Fla.

Cohen lost to UCLA's Paige Yaroshuk 6-4, 6-0. Cohen later teamed with Fiers in doubles, losing 6-4, 6-2 to Arizona State's Stephanie Landsdorp and Katy Propstra.

VMI men's lacrosse players David Belfiore and Joe Brockman have been chosen to the South squad for the 54th annual North-South Senior All-Star game June 8 at Hofstra University.

Belfiore, a midfielder, finished third in scoring for the Keydets with 40 points. Brockman, an attackman selected as an alternate, led the Keydets in goals (43) and points (72).

UVa men's basketball player Chase Metheney has been selected to an exhibition basketball team organized by People to People Sports.

The team will play a series of games May 25-June 2 in Europe.

Virginia right-hander Seth Greisinger was named to the Mizuno NCAA Division I All-America baseball first team. Greisinger, a junior, finished the regular season with an 11-2 record and a 1.82 ERA. He fanned 135 and walked 35 in 114 innings.

Virginia Tech relief pitcher Charlie Gillian was selected to the third team.

PREPS Cave Spring wins RVD softball

In the Roanoke Valley District softball tournament in Rocky Mount, Cave Spring walloped William Fleming 24-3 in a semifinals and Franklin County 20-2 for the championship in games stopped after five innings.

In the semifinal, Cave Spring had 24 hits. Kari Whitney tripled twice and doubled in five trips while knocking in six runs. In the championship game, Kay Brittain homered and knocked in three runs.

The victories send Cave Spring into a Northwest Region home game Monday against an opponent to be determined.

Lord Botetourt repeated its regular-season Blue Ridge District softball title as the Cavaliers beat Northside 8-5 for the championship.

Both teams advance to the Region III tournament starting Monday at Tunstall.

Lizzie Keister was 3-for-3 with four RBI in the title game. Northside took a 4-1 lead as Lisa Mowles doubled to knock in two runs. The Cavaliers rallied to tie the score in the third inning when Keister singled in the tying run.

Botetourt took the lead in the fourth with four unearned runs. The go-ahead run came on Jessica Davisson's single that sent Katrina Elliott home. Then Sara Moore walked and Keister doubled in two runs.

In semifinal action, the Vikings stunned William Byrd 2-0 for their first victory ever over the Terriers in softball. Erin Weaver scattered five hits and struck out six while Amanda Oliver and Melinda Beckner knocked in runs. Byrd's Tamassa Adams struck out five and allowed only two hits in a losing cause.

Botetourt eased past Alleghany 4-3 after Teresa Snodgrass singled in the winning run in the seventh. Alleghany had rallied for three in the top of the inning as Joy Gauthier singled in two runs for the tie.

Wes Self pitched five innings, striking out eight, to lead Grayson County past Fort Chiswell 12-2 for the Mountain Empire District baseball title in Independence.

Chad Shaffner went 3-for-3 with two RBI for Grayson County (20-1). Both teams advance to Region C games at 5 p.m. Tuesday. Grayson County will entertain Shawsville and Fort Chiswell travels to Giles.

Timesland teams and individuals will be after track honors in three meets this weekend, starting with today's Northwest Region championships in Charlottesville.

Patrick Henry will be seeking its second consecutive boys' title and will have to fend off a strong challenge from Woodbridge and E.C. Glass.

On Saturday, Trish Nervo of Glenvar goes for repeat titles in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs at the Group A meet in Charlottesville.

In Harrisonburg, Staunton River and Christiansburg have a shot at competing for the Group AA boys' titles Saturday after they won regional titles last weekend.In all three meets, there is no Timesland girls' team that figures to have a legitimate shot at winning a team title.

The Salem-William Byrd Region III boys' soccer championship game has been moved to Northside tonight at 7. William Byrd has beaten Salem three times and both teams are in the Group AA boys' soccer tournament starting next week. Tonight's winner will get a first-round home game.

Siple heads Bridgewater honorees

Former Clifton Forge High School baseball standout and a coach at Covington Boys' Home Paul Siple will be one of eight people inducted into the Bridgewater College Sports Hall of Fame this fall.

Other Timesland inductees include: Charlie Kurtz, a former principal and coach at Parry McCluer High School who also was a star baseball and football player at Bridgewater; and former Salem resident Mel ``Shifty'' Myers, who was men's basketball coach.

Joining these three are: Margaret Horn, a women's archery and badminton coach at James Madison; basketball and baseball star Billy Burkholder; baseball pitcher Wayne Myers; high school coach Don Glick; and lacrosse, soccer, field hockey and basketball star Brenda Downs.

The Roanoke Rush minor-league football team is holding tryouts the next two weekends in Montgomery County.

The first tryout will be Saturday at Blacksburg High School, followed by a second tryout June 1 at Shawsville High School. Registration runs from 9-9:30 a.m. followed by a two-hour workout. Registration fee is $25.

Rush coach Duke Strager said players should bring cleats and tennis shoes to the workouts.
