CORNING MAKES MAJOR DONATION TO LIBRARY

The Corning Inc. Foundation formally donated $25,000 to the Montgomery Floyd Regional Library Foundation toward the refurbished Blacksburg branch on Thursday.

The donation will be paid in installments of slightly more than $8,000 each over the next three years.

Corning's donation, in addition to another $46,000 from 10 local corporations and organizations during the last month, brings the total fund-raising pot to $142,842 for finishing touches to the new Blacksburg branch library.

Those other corporations include: Central Fidelity, Columbia Montgomery Regional Hospital, First Union, Hoechst Celanese Corp., Litton Industries Poly-Scientific Division, National Bank of Blacksburg, First National Bank, Snyder Hunt, the Virginia Tech Foundation and another company that will be announced at a later date.

As part of its contribution, Corning challenged other corporations to match its $25,000.

Construction on the refurbished branch is expected to be completed by late summer. Most of the cost of the library expansion and renovation is being paid for via general obligation bonds that county voters OK'd in 1993. But to make the bond referendum more politically palatable, organizers kept the library bond under $2 million. That left paying for new furnishings and other finishing touches up to the fund-raising efforts.
