ARNOLD, Lillian Edith, 99, of Roanoke, died Thursday, May 23, 1996. She is survived by her husband of 79 years, Milton H. (Pete) Arnold; children, Reverend Gene and wife Elizabeth Arnold, Vinton; Maynard H. and wife Mary Arnold, Ridgeway; Robert D. and wife Edna Arnold, Ringgold; Janie J. Jones; ten grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at the Lotz Roanoke Chapel by Reverend Claude Dykes and Reverend Carter Sloan with burial in the Henry Memorial Park. BELL, Rose Rhudy, 95, of Route 1, Austinville, died Wednesday, May 15, 1996, in Florida. She was born in Wythe County, the daughter of the late George E. and Teresa King Rhudy. She was a graduate of Radford Teacher's College and taught in the Wythe County Schoo l System for 25 years at Bethany and Austinville Schools. She was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Wytheville, and was preceded in death by her husband, Roy G. Bell, Chief Chemist with the New Jersey Zinc Company. She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Roy Rhudy and Janet Bell of Tampa, Fla., David Randolph and Cleo Bell of Dallas, Texas, Richard Mahlon and Annette Bell of Ashville, N.C.; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be held Saturday, May 25, 1996, at 2 p.m. at the Bethany Cemetery with the Rev. Steven Ridenhour officiating. Reese Funeral Home in Austinville is in charge of the arrangements.

BOWYER, Thelma Poff, 77, of Salem, went to sleep May 22, 1996, now to await the blessed resurrection. She was preceded in death by her mother, Mrs. Hallie G. Poff, her father, J. Lem Poff, her brother, Ralph G. Poff, brother-in-law, Ralph R. Atkinson. She is survived by her sister, Alberta P. Atkinson, Salem; her nephew, Eddie R. Atkinson, Flushing, Mich.; nieces, Vicki Brown, Salem, Mona Lisa McKimmy, Davison, Mich. She was a member of the Memorial Avenue Seventh Day Adventist Church for the past 32 years. She retired from South Roanoke Nursing Home after 28 years of service. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Saturday, May 25, 1996 at the John M. CASSELL, Mary Etta Spangler, 82, of Roanoke, died at her home Thursday, May 23, 1996 in the loving care of Gentle Shepherd Hospice. She is survived by her brother, J. T. Spangler and his wife Catherine of Winston-Salem, N.C. Grave side services will be held Friday, May 24, 1996 at 9 a.m. at Sherwood Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers the family asks that Gentle Shepherd Hospice charities, 4040 Franklin Road, Southwest, VA 24014 be remembered. Arrangements are being handled by Lotz Salem Chapel.

DOOLEY, Roy Edward Sr., 84, of Route 1, Montvale, went to be with the Lord Thursday, May 21, 1996. He was loved by his family and will be truly missed. He was born June 28, 1911 in Bedford County, a son of the late Charles E. Dooley and Lura Etta Dooley Dooley. He retired from U.S. Steel after 24 years, and was a member of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Montvale. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Ruby McDaniel Dooley; two sons and daughters-in-law, Roy E. Jr. and Elmadine Dooley, Montvale, Tommy R. and Lois Dooley, Blue Ridge; two daughters and sons-in-law, Alma J. and Walter Rieley, Ann and David Hawkins, both of Thaxton; a brother, Kenneth Dooley, Thaxton; two sisters, Hazel Hall, Vinton, Eva Wheeler, Roanoke; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, May 25, 1996, at 11 a.m. from the Updike Funeral Chapel, Bedford by the Rev. Dr. William Vest and the Rev. Dewey Page. FISHER, Jack Prillaman, Sr. 74, of Callaway, died Wednesday, May 22, 1996. Mr. Fisher was a veteran of World War II, a member of The American Legion Post #96 and was retired from the US Postal Service having served as Post Master and Rural Mail Carrier in Callaway. He was a son of L.M. and Lula Prillaman Fisher and was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Fisher. Surviving are his former wife, Loleine B. Fisher, Roanoke; son and daughter-in-law, Jack (J.P.) and Eleanor Fisher, Fredericksburg; son, Eddie Fisher and companion, Annette Cundiff, Bedford; daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Daniel Laprade, Rocky Mount; daughter, Ava Fisher and companion, Kerry Plunkett, Roanoke; grandchildren, Angela, Crystal, Jay and Timmy Fisher, Beverly, Cindy and Keith Laprade; one great-grandchild, Johnathan Fisher; two brothers; and one sister-in-law, Bill and Hazel Fisher, Howard Lee Fisher, Callaway; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Edith Paige and Jack Helms, Rocky Mount, Betty Jane Guilliams, Callaway; two sisters-in-law, Carrie Fisher, Roanoke, Toni Fisher, Bloomington, Ill. FRYE, Leona D., 96, of Hillsville, Va., died Wednesday, May 22, 1996, in the Twin County Regional Hospital in Galax. She was born in Edmonds , North Carolina the daughter of the late Flemming Cooper & Delia Killen Davis. She was preceded in death by her husband, William D. Frye. She is survived by a daughter-in-law, Edith and William Hencke, Slatington, Penn.; son and daughter-in-law, William J. and Charlotte C. Frye, Minneapolis, Minn.; brother-in-law, Stephen Frye, Rt. 3 Wytheville; eight grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 25, 1996, at 11 a.m. at the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church with the Rev. John Ricks and The Rev. Levi H. Humphreys Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Zion Cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time. HAMILTON, Samuel Robert, 70, of Wirtz, died Wednesday, May 22, 1996 at his home. He was born in Buffalo, N.Y. and has resided in Franklin Co. since 1960. He was the oldest son of Ray S. Hamilton and Virginia Pasley Hamilton. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict. He is survived by two brothers and two sisters. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Scruggs Rescue Squad. A memorial gathering for friends and family will be held at Sam's home on Sunday, May 26, 1996 from 2 to 5 p.m. All are welcome.

HEDGE, Homer Clyde, 79, of Wytheville, Va., died Tuesday, May 21, 1996 in the Wytheville Community Hospital. He was born in Wythe County, the son of the late Jesse Wade and Fairy Belle Myers Hedge. He was a retired Auto Mechanic from the Radford Army Ammunition Plant, and a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Wytheville Masonic Lodge #821 AF & AM and a member of the VFW Post #2719. He was a member of the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church and was preceded in death by his wife, Inez Aker Hedge, and two daughters, Sonja Gail and Jacqualine Inez Hedge. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Homer Ray and Sally Hedge, Speedwell, Va.; two grandchildren, Allen Todd Crigger, Sugar Grove, Bryan Ray Hedge, Wytheville; three sisters, Stella Wagner, Radford, Edna Keffer, Richmond, Dorothy Kirby, Pulaski; one brother, Sheard Hedge, Pulaski. Funeral services will be held Friday, May 24, 1996 at 1:00 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Allen C. Ashford officiating. Interment will follow in the West End Cemetery with graveside military rites conducted by the American Legion Post #9. HODGES, Elwood Lee, 68, of Hardy, died Wednesday, May 22, 1996 in a Roanoke Hospital. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Mr. Hodges was preceded in death by his parents, Edgie M. and Cynthia C. Hodges, and a brother, Edgar M. Hodges. Surviving are his wife, Marie B. Hodges; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Wanda and Gary Carroll, Bland, Cathy and Curtis Bobbitt, Bedford, Cynthia M. Hodges, Hardy; one son, Harvey R. Hodges, Hardy; grandchildren, Sonya C. Duncan, Denise Edwards, Leslie Carroll, Jason Bobbitt, Crista Tyree; one great-grandchildren, Erin Duncan; two sisters, Evelyn Hubbard, Glade Hill, Lolene Corron, Moneta; one brother, Calvin Hodges, Glade Hill; several nieces and nephews. HODGES, Joseph Franklin, 86, of Rocky Mount, passed away Wednesday, May 22, 1996. Born June 21, 1909, he was a son of the late Joe Johnson and Mary Dunman Hodges. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Charlie and Jesse Hodges. Surviving are his wife, Lillie Inez Hodges of the home; three sisters, Susan Hodges of Martinsville, Mary Hodges, Loraine Hall, both of Rocky Mount; two brothers, James Hodges and George Hodges, both of Rocky Mount; several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday, May 25, 1996, at Lynch Funeral Home with the Revs. Hubert Seemann and Lewis Arnold officiating. Interment will follow in Franklin Memorial Park. JENNINGS, Viola Jennings, 87, of 3111 Angell Ave., NW, Roanoke, died May 23, 1996, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, Spartanburg, S.C. A native of Halifax County, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Richard Hunter and Leola DeJarnette Jennings and the widow of Roy Merritt Jennings. Survivors include two daughters, Connie Yates, Spartanburg, SC, and Peggy Jennings, Drayton, SC; two brothers, Hubert Carlton Jennings, Roanoke and Frank George Jennings, Richmond; three grandsons, Donald W. Yates Jr., Austin, Texas, David J. Yates, Spartanburg, S.C. and Scott M. Yates, Reston, Va.; and six great-grandchildren. Graveside services and burial will be Saturday, May 25, at 1:00 p.m. at the Cloverbottom Baptist Church, Nathalie, Va. KARNES, William Dexter, 57, of 1648 Shady Knoll Avenue, Bedford, died Wednesday, May 22, 1996, in Roanoke Memorial Hospital following a brief illness. He was born in Bedford County on March 18, 1939 a son of the late Fonie Owen Karnes and Rebecca Eliza St.Clair Karnes. He was a member of Thaxton Baptist Church, a supervisor for Central Virginia Training Center, and a U.S. Army veteran. He loved children and coached in the Bedford Dixie Youth baseball program for over 20 years. He was preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters. He is survived by his wife, Pamela Stanley Karnes; a son and daughter-in-law, Brian M. and Chanel T. Karnes, Myrtle Beach, S.C.; two daughters and son-in-law, Kellie K. and John W. Owens Jr. and Angela D. Key, all of Myrtle Beach; a sister, Mildred Karnes Walton, Bedford; two grandchildren, Ashley E. Owens and Lindsey M. Owens. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m., Saturday, May 25, 1996 at the Carder-Tharp Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Michael R. DuVal and the Rev. Dr. Donald M. Gillette officiating. Also surviving are his wife of 70 years, Cassie Dean Mason; a daughter, Marion Bibb, Springfield; six grandchildren, including Betty Thorp, Rocky Mount, Tommy Mason, Roanoke, Marion Jordon, Apex, N. SMITH, Deborah Hubbard, 44, of Roanoke, passed away Wednesday, May 22, 1996 in a local hospital. She was preceded in death by her father, Robert Reed Hubbard. Mrs. Smith was a graduate of William Byrd High School and the Virginia Bankers School. She was employed by Dominion Bankshares as a Vice President of Real Estate Lending for 17 years. Mrs. Smith was a member of Cave Spring Baptist Church. She was a loving and devoted daughter, wife, mother and sister. Surviving are her husband, T. Michael Smith; two sons, 2nd Lt. Jack E. Glover, III, Robert N. Hatch, III, all of Roanoke; mother, Doris L. Hubbard, Vinton; sister and brother-in-law, Vickie H. and Col. Daniel J. Darnell, Springfield, Va.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Michael R. and Suzie G. Hubbard, Richmond, Robert J. and Vickie P. SMYTHERS, Oza Rae, 80, of Hillsville, passed away Thursday, May 23, 1996 at Twin County Regional Hospital, Galax, Va. She was born April 11, 1916 in Carroll County, Va. Mrs. Smythers was preceded in death by her parents, Mack and Dana Carter Gravley. She is survived by her husband, Vinton C. Smythers, of the home; four sons and daughters-in-law, Elvin and Andrea Smythers, Culpeper, Duane and Alene Smythers, Hillsville, David and Gloria Smythers, Jacksonville, Fla., Gene and Brenda Smythers, Laurel, Md.; seven daughters and sons-in-law, Bernice and Ray Maddox, Lynchburg, Joyce and Ernest Webb, Hillsville, Gloria and Bill Reece, Indian Valley, Wanda Sue Parnell, Hillsville, Carolyn and Dale Marsh, Low Gap, N.C., Susan and Conrad Surratt, Kernersville, N.C., Karen and Mark Taylor, Independence; one brother and sister-in-law, Maynard and Nancy Gravley, Hillsville; two sisters, Lura Coulson, Delphia Walls, both of Hillsville; 23 grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. TALLEY, Nelle White, 102, of Daleville, died Wednesday, May 22, 1996. She was the widow of Edward William Talley and a long time member of Huntington Court United Methodist Church. Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Wenona W. and Maurice M. Kessler, Daleville; grandson, Michael M. Kessler and wife, Teri, Vinton; great-grandsons, Michael Martin Kessler, Matthew Gray Kessler; sisters, Carrie White Wilhoit, Tivoli, Texas, Mildred White Small, Greenwood, Ind.; a number of nieces.
