POLICE: CAR HIJACKED; DRIVER ROBBED

A man who hid in the back seat of a 28-year-old Northwest Roanoke woman's car Friday morning later robbed her and stole her car.

Police gave this account of what happened: The woman was on her way to a bank in the 2200 block of Melrose Avenue Northwest about 10:45 to make a deposit for her employer. She stopped to get gas in the 3400 block of Melrose and then continued toward the bank.

She noticed a man crouched in the back seat who then ordered her to turn north off of Melrose, ending up near Fairland Road and Ordway Drive. He told her to stop and get out of the car.

The man smacked her and took the bank bag she had tucked into her pants. He got into her red Chevrolet station wagon and drove off.

Police reported two other robberies Friday:

* An 80-year-old Bedford woman's purse was snatched from her Wednesday afternoon outside the K&W Cafeteria at Crossroads Mall.

As the woman walked across the parking lot about 12:15 p.m., a white station wagon pulled close to her and the driver grabbed her purse. The woman was not injured, but the robber made off with $100 and her purse, police said.

* A Northwest Roanoke County convenience store was robbed early Friday as the clerk counted out change at the register. No one was injured.

Police gave this account of what happened: At about 3:30 a.m., a man walked into the Uni-Mart at 5420 Peters Creek Road and took an item to the clerk. As the clerk rang up the merchandise and opened the register, the man reached across the counter and grabbed cash from the clerk's hand.

The man fled in a brown car. No weapon was displayed.

No arrests have been made in any of the cases.
