ADKINS, Bertha Ellen Smith, 86, of McCoy, died Thursday, May 23, 1996 at Heritage Hall Health Care Center. Mrs. Adkins was born in Montgomery County on May 10, 1910 to the late Lee Andrew and Ella Mae Smith. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Frank Spencer Adkins, two brothers, Roy Lee ``Phillip"" Smith and Lonnie Smith, one sister, Clara Belle Marshall and two great-grandchildren. Surviving are eight sons and daughters-in-law, Ernest and Helen Adkins, Safford Adkins, all of Christiansburg, Frank B. and Martha Adkins, New Mexico, Clarence and Mildred Adkins, Salem, Robert and Diane Adkins, Russell Adkins and John Adkins, all of Blacksburg and Fred Adkins of North Carolina; three daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and Connie Croy, Florence and Dale Sheppard, all of Salem and Hazel and Don Bell of North Carolina; one brother, John Melvin Smith, McCoy; five sisters, Lelia ``Mid"" Flinchum and Lucy ``Punch"" Kessinger, both of McCoy, Janie Simpkins, Pulaski, Nora Flinchum, Christiansburg and Thelma Farmer, Orville, Washington; thirty-two grandchildren; thirty-nine great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Sunday, May 26, 1996 at 2 p.m. at McCoy Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Cecil Frazier officiating. Interment will follow in the Harless Cemetery, Longshop. The family will receive friends Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. at McCoy Funeral Home, Blacksburg.

ALLEY, Betty Louise, 60, of Webster, Fla., and formerly of Roanoke, died Thursday, May 23, 1996. Arrangements by Oakey's North Chapel.

ARMSTRONG, Hattie Ayers, 93, of Lexington, died Friday, May 24, 1996 in Stonewall Jackson Hospital. Born April 25, 1903 in Rockbridge County, she was the daughter of the late William Brady Ayers and Cornelia Hughes Ayers. She was the widow of Lubie H. Armstrong, who preceded her in death in 1981 after 60 years of marriage. Mrs. Armstrong was an active and Charter Member and Past president of the East Lexington Home Demonstration Club, former member of Gillock Sunday School Class and a Morning Circle of Trinity United Methodist Church, where she was a life-long member and was confirmed at the age of thirteen. Mrs. Armstrong was a life-ling resident of Lexington and Rockbridge Co. and knew every inch of Rockbridge Co. and its families. Friends and family enjoyed her stories of the olden days. Surviving are her daughter, Eleanor Armstrong Scott, Greenville, Miss.; granddaughter and husband, Susan and James Blaine, Greenville, Miss; grandson and wife, Mark and Deborah Scott, Williamsburg, Va.; great-grandchildren, Mark and Betsy Scott, Williamsburg; sisters, Mrs. Fred (Ruth) Arndt, Lexington, Mrs. Frank (Louise) McCormick, Lexington; brother, William Brady Ayers, Chapperal, New Mexico. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, May 26, 1996 at 4 p.m. from Trinity United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Kenneth Patrick and the Rev. Frederick Arndt officiating. BURKETT, Robert Earl, 79, of The Seabrook died at the Fraser Health Center, Hilton Head, S.C. on Wednesday, May 15, 1996. He was a Manager of Manufacturing for General Electric Company until his retirement to Hilton Head Island. He was preceded in death by his wife, Madeline Bradford Burkett. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 28, 1996 at St. Lukes Episcopal Church with the Rev. Greg Kronz officiating. CAWLEY, John Hartford, 83, of Vinton, passed away Friday, May 24,1996. He was retired after 22 years of service for the City of Roanoke Water Department as a Filter Plant Operator. He is preceded in death by his wife, Myrtle Williamson Cawley; one step son, Cleve Edward Williamson. He is survived by two daughters, Carolyn C. Yopp, Shelby C. Beard; two step sons, Claude Calvin Williamson, Dallas Eugene Williams on; one brother, Jasper Lewis Cawley; granddaughter, Cassandra B. DALTON, Elva, 84 of Wytheville, passed away Thursday, May 23, 1996, at Wythe County Community Hospital. She was born February 17, 1912 in Carroll County. She is survived by her husband, Clemance Dalton; sister, Hassie Moore, Dugspur; brothers, Ralph Huff, Riner, Guy Huff, Dugspur; several nieces and nephews. HEDGE, Homer Cloyd, 79, of Wytheville, Va., died Tuesday, May 21, 1996 in the Wytheville Community Hospital. He was born in Wythe County, the son of the late Jesse Wade and Fairy Belle Myers Hedge. He was a retired Auto Mechanic from the Radford Army Ammunition Plant, and a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Wytheville Masonic Lodge #821 AF & AM and a member of the VFW Post #2719. He was a member of the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church and was preceded in death by his wife, Inez Aker Hedge, and two daughters, Sonja Gail and Jacqualine Inez Hedge. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Homer Ray and Sally Hedge, Speedwell, Va.; two grandchildren, Allen Todd Crigger, Sugar Grove, Bryan Ray Hedge, Wytheville; three sisters, Stella Wagner, Radford, Edna Keffer, Richmond, Dorothy Kirby, Pulaski; one brother, Sheard Hedge, Pulaski. Funeral services will be held Friday, May 24, 1996 at 1:00 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Allen C. Ashford officiating. Interment will follow in the West End Cemetery with graveside military rites conducted by the American Legion Post #9. JOHNSON, Frank Melvin, 70, of Rocky Mount, died Friday, May 24, 1996 in a Roanoke Hospital. Mr. Johnson was a retired supervisor from Lane Furniture Co. Surviving are 3 brothers and 2 sisters-in-law, Raymond B. (Buck) Johnson, Billy G. and Bernice Johnson, all of Rocky Mount, Doug and Ernestine Johnson of Glade Hill; 2 nieces, Michelle Johnson and Sue Secrist; 1 nephew, Gary Johnson. KIRKLAND, James Martin, 74, of Route 1, Box 114-E, Union Hall, formerly of Lexington, passed away at his home on May 22, 1996, after a long illness. He was born October 24, 1921, in Corinth, Miss. and was the son of the late James M. Kirkland and Ella Mae Utely Kirkland. Mr. Kirkland was an EX-POW, having retired from the US Army in 1967 with over 21 years services including VMI ROTC duty, an Associate at the Reeves Center at Washington & Lee University from which he retired in 1992. He was a member of Sebastian Masonic Lodge No. 706, Ft. Smith, Ark. and American Legion, and also of Glade Hill Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his stepson, Jesse McKemy. Surviving are wife, Margaret (Maggie) Sibold Kirkland, Union Hall; daughter, Laura Waro, Centreville; two stepdaughters, Venny Halloran, Coatesville, Pa., Susan McKemy, Vienna; sister, Louise Brooks, Corinth, Miss.; grandchildren, Liam and Shamus Halloran and Margaret (Maisie) Waro; special friends, Mike, Joanne and Shelly Hutsenpiller, Union Hall. LANDRETH, Iva, 75, died Thursday, May 23, 1996, in the Smyth County Community Hospital. Survivors include a husband, Dr. Sam F. Landreth, Marion; three sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth and Barbara Landreth, Morgantown, W.Va., Jerry and Louann Land reth, Christiansburg, David and Seattina Landreth, Johnson City, Tenn.; one brother and sister-in-law, William and Martha Vaughan, Salem; one aunt, Dessie Thomas, Fries; two grandsons, Matthew Landreth, and Benjamin Landreth. LATIMER, Louise Groff, 73, of Charlotte, N.C., died Thursday, May 23, 1996, at her home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:30 a.m. Saturday, May 25, 1996, from the sanctuary of St. Matthew Catholic Church with The Rev. Monsignor Joseph Kerin, Celebrant. Committal will follow in Providence Presbyterian Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at McEwen Pineville Chapel, 10500 Park Road. Mrs. Latimer was born April 26, 1923 in Greenville, S.C., the daughter of the late Lawrence P. Slattery and Louise Phillips Slattery. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Matthew Catholic Church, Charlotte. Mrs. Latimer is survived by her beloved husband, James K. Latimer of Charlotte, N.C.; two sons, Richard G. Groff of Bradenton, Fla. and William S. Groff of Charlotte, N.C,; two daughters, Mrs. Joseph C. Love Jr. (Patty) of Richmond and Mrs. Glenn M. Reed (Peggy) of Roanoke; grandchildren, Anne M. Love of Richmond, Patricia A. Reed and R. Jackson Reed, both of Roanoke; stepdaughter, Mrs. Lanier Oakes of Memphis, Tenn.; stepson, James K. VAUGHN, Virginia L., 74, of Nimitz, W. Va., died Friday, May 24,1996. She is survived by her husband, Richard Vaughn; six daughters and four sons-in-law, Becky and L. J. Huffman of Hawaii, Kitty and Joe Coleman, Roanoke, Andria and Arthur Adkins, Barger Springs, W. Va., Teri and John Clark, Hinton, W. Va., Cindi Vaughn, Tami Willey, both of Nimitz, W. Va.; 14 grandchildren; and one great-g randdaughter. She is also survived by her mother, Cora Fix of Hilldale, W. WOHLFORD, Charles Clayton, 72, of Rt. 4, Wytheville, the Greasy Creek Community, died Friday, May 24, 1996 in the Smyth County Community Hospital. He was a very active member of the Mt. Ephraim United Methodist Church, where he served as Superintendent of Sunday School, Trustee and held various other positions. He was retired from Lightening/Mixing Company and was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II, and was a Wythe County farmer. He was preceded in death by his father, Allen Reed Wohlford, a son-in-law, W. R. Grubb, and a sister, Thelma Wohlford Tarter. He is survived by his wife, Cynthia Brown Johnson Wohlford, of the home; four daughters and sons-in-law, Rebecca Grubb, Crockett, Chesley and Gerald Musser, Deanna and Charlie Vipperman, all of Rural Retreat, Reva and Donnie Anderson, Wytheville; one son and daughter-in-law, Stephen Clayton and Karen Wohlford, Draper; five grandchildren, Keith and Jeremiah Musser, Stephanie and Kellen Wohlford, Jerod Vipperman; his mother, Nettie Mae Irvin Wohlford, Rt. 4, Wytheville; five sisters, Elizabeth W. WOOD, Berter Beverly, 74, of Buena Vista, died Thursday, May 23, 1996 in the Shenandoah Valley Health Care Center. Mrs. Wood was born July 3, 1921 in Amherst County, a d aughter of the late Lewis Beverly and Hallie Roberts Beverly. She was a member of the Buena Vista Pentecostal Holiness Church. Surviving are her husband, James V. Wood, Buena Vista; five children, James W. Wood of Maryland, Mary Elizabeth Ramsey, Portsmouth, Doris Jean Turner, V. Eugene Wood and Herman Beverly Wood, all of Buena Vista; two brothers, Archie Beverly, Burford Beverly, both of Buena Vista; one sister, Lena Camper, Buena Vista; 15 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m. Sunday, May 26, 1996 at the Buena Vista Pentecostal Holiness Church, with the Rev. W. David Bain officiating.
