The June issue of "Trains" magazine features an article on Norfolk Southern Railway's Wasteline Express, which hauls garbage from a transfer station near downtown Roanoke to the Smith Mountain Gap regional landfill at Bradshaw.
The article, written by Roanoke writer Betrsy Biesenbach, trace the history of the "trash train" and describes its operation. The train, which has run five days a week since May 16, 1994, carries 800 tons of Roanoke Valley garbage each day on a 33-mile trip to the 1,200-acre landfill.
According to "Trains," the current generation of garbage-hauling trains date back to the 1970s and are more prevalent in the Pacific Northwest than other parts of the country.
