ALLEY, Betty Louise Hall, 60, of Webster, Fla., and formerly of Roanoke, Va., passed away Thursday, May 23, 1996, at her residence. She was the daughter of the late Marshall E. Sr. and Dorothy M. Hall. Surviving are her lifetime companion, Robert T. Reynolds of Webster, Fla.; two sons, William Edward Alley of Orlando, Fla., and Stephen D. Jones of Charlotte, N.C.; five daughters, Mary L. Bowe n of Roanoke, Sandra G. Bradshaw of Charlotte, N.C., Debra S. Alley, Brenda K. Stavrou and Cinthia R. Walters of Baltimore, Md.; 14 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; a sister, and six brothers. Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Tuesday from Oakey's North Chapel. BENSON, Garnet Marie, 61, of Salem, died Saturday, May 25, 1996, at Lewis-Gale Hospital. Memorial services will be at 12 noon Monday, May 27, 1996, at Lotz Salem Chapel, with the Rev. Bill Atkins officiating. Mrs. Benson was a native of Botetourt County and a homemaker. Survivors include her loving sons, Charles K. BOWYER, Thelma Poff, 77, of Salem, went to sleep May 22, 1996, now to await the blessed resurrection. She was preceded in death by her mother, Mrs. Hallie G. Poff, her father, J. Lem Poff, her brother, Ralph G. Poff, brother-in-law, Ralph R. Atkinson. She is survived by her sister, Alberta P. Atkinson, Salem; her nephew, Eddie R. Atkinson, Flushing, Mich.; nieces, Vicki Brown, Salem, Mona Lisa McKimmy, Davison, Mich.; great-niece, Judith Johnson; nephew, Ernest King of Roanoke, Chris Atkinson of Flint, Mich., Scott Atkinson, Flushing, Mich.; three great-great-nieces; six great-great-nephews. She was a member of the Memorial Avenue Seventh Day Adventist Church for the past 32 years. She retired from South Roanoke Nursing Home after 28 years of service. BROOKS, Herman Ray, 60, of Roanoke, passed away Friday, May 24, 1996, in a local hospital. He served with the U.S. Army and was retired from General Electric Company in Salem. Survivors include his wife, Jean B. Brooks; two brothers, Carlton T. Brooks, Roanoke, Robert Woodrow Brooks, Windover, Nev.; several nieces, nephews, grandniece and grandnephews. CARROLL, Gerald N., (``Jerry""), 76, of Vinton, died Saturday, May 24, 1996 at the Veterans Hospital in Salem. He was a veteran of World War II having served with the Army Air-Force. He was a member of Vinton Baptist Church and an ordained Deacon for over 50 years. He was a life member of Virginia Association of Volunteer Rescue Squads, past vice-president of the 6th District of Virginia Association of Volunteer Rescue Squads. He was a life member of Vinton First Aid Crew and an honorary member of Bedford County Life Saving Crew. He was the son of the late Walter M. Carroll and Minnie Forbes Carroll. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mildred B. Carroll; two sons and daughters-in-law, Gary E. and Mot (Martha) Carroll, Cherry Grove, S.C., Dennis N. DALTON, Joel Emerson, (``Sparrell""), 80, of Laurel Fork, passed away Saturday, May 25, 1996 at his home. He was former owner of Vesta Supply. Survivors include his wif e, Luvina B. DOWNS, James Lewis, Jr., 65, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, May 25, 1996. He was born November 21, 1930, in Roanoke, Va., to the late James L. and Minnie Dudding Downs. He retired from Norfolk Southern Corporation with 32 years of service as Staff Assistant to the Vice President of Taxation. He retired from the U.S. Army, having served with the 7th Calvary Division in Tokyo, Japan, 8th Calvary in the Korean War. He was the recipient of the Purple Heart, CIB Badge and Bronze Star. He was a member of the 1st Calvary Division Association, life member of Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Korean War Veteran Association, the Military Order of the Purple Heart, Past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus, Third Degree Council #562, Past Faithful Navigator, Fourth Degree Assembly #1167, Knights of Columbus, Former District Deputy, State of Virginia, Knights of Columb us. He was a member of Elks Lodge B.P.O.E. #197. He was preceded in death by brothers, Kenneth E. Downs and Bobby Lee Downs. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Meredith Downs; sons, Michael Meredith Downs and Phillip Lewis Downs all of Roanoke; son and daughter-in-law, Charles A. HELLER, Gardner Parrish, (``Fritz""), 75, of Richmond, died Friday, May 24, 1996, at his home. He was the son of former State Senator George Edward Heller and Elizabeth Bond Heller of Bedford. Mr. Heller is survived by his wife, Ann Engart Heller; sons, Buford Bond (``Bo"") Heller of Chicago, Ill., and Frederick Palmer (``Ted"") Heller of Richmond; daughters, Susan Heller Reynolds of Lexington and Pamela Heller Black of Fredericksburg; seven grandchildren, and a sister, Betty Bond Nichols of Lexington. He graduated from Virginia Military Institute in the Class of 1943, and for the past 13 years served as the 1943 Class Agent. After graduation, he served as an officer in the United States Army for the remainder of World War II, obtaining the rank of Captain. After receiving an Honorable Discharge from the Army, he returned briefly to Virginia Military Institute as an instructor in the chemistry department. Until his retirement, he was employed as a chemist for the duPont Corporation. He was a member of the first Technical Advisory Committee of Virginia's Air Pollution Control Board. Mr. Heller was an avid sportsman and was singles tennis champion of Ridge Top Recreation Association for several years. He was a member of the Richmond Gentry. A memorial service will be held at the First Unitarian Church at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 28. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the VMI Endowment Fund or the American Cancer Society.

JENNINGS, Willie Everette, 90, of Roanoke, died Monday, May 20, 1996, at his residence. He was the widower of Launa Mae Emerson Jennings. JONES, Robert Ernest, (``Bob""), 68, of Marion, died Saturday, May 25, 1996, in Smyth County Community Hospital. He was a lifelong resident of Marion, where he owned and managed Triangle Service Station for 32 years until his retirement in 1988. He was founder and owner of the first privately-owned ambulance service in the county. Smyth County Ambulance Service was established in 1979. Mr. Jones was a member of Marion Baptist Church, a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II, and a lifetime member of VFW Post #4667 in Marion. Survivors include his wife, Patricia Fry Jones; two sons, Allan D. Jones of Marion and Robert Gregory Jones of Rich Valley; a daughter, Vicki Jones Donnelly of Abingdon; two stepsons, Bradford M. Fry of Marion and Robert E. Fry, U.S. Army, RAF Alconbury, England; his mother, Laura H. Jones of Marion; one brother, Donald D. Jones of Marion; three sisters, Joanne W. Tallent and Charlene J. Burnop of Marion, and Linda J. Siegel of Kingsport, Tenn.; nine grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. MORTON, Irma F., 90, of Lake City, Fla., died Saturday, May 25, 1996 in the North Florida Regional Medical Center in Gainesville, Fla. following an extended illness. A native of Henry, Va., Mrs. Morton had been a resident of Lake City, Fla. for the past fifteen years having moved from Madison, N.C. Mrs. Morton was retired from the textile industry. She was a member of the Southside Baptist Church. She taught Sunday School for several years at the Grace Baptist Church in Madison, N.C. Mrs. Morton is survived by three sons, Ralph J. Morton, Lake City, Fla., Sergeant Major Charles W. Morton, Madison, N.C., James E. Morton, Lake City, Fla.; three sisters, Odesa Holt, Mayodan, N.C., Velma Young and Mamie Martin both of Bassette, N.C.; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 29, 1996 in the Grace Baptist Church in Madison, N.C. with the Rev. Calvin Freeman officiating. Interment will follow in the Bethesda Methodist Church Cemetery in Madison, N.C. REED, Marie Adams, of Vinton, went to sleep at home on Saturday, May 25, 1996. She was surrounded by those she loved the most, her immediate family. She left a legacy of courage, loyalty and faith . She was preceded in death by her father and mother, John and Elizabeth Adams, and her two brothers, Leonard and Tommy Adams of Roanoke. Surviving are her husband, Glenn O. Reed; daughters, Dianne Zeigler, Deborah Dowless and Cynthia Cribb, all of the Roanoke Valley; sisters, Mrs. Mamie Rock and husband Herman of Falls Church, Helen Bowers of Roanoke and Mrs. Louise Fisher and husband Max of Gulf Shores, Ala.; a brother, Raymond A. Adams of Vinton, and nine grandchildren. Her memory will be cherished by all who knew her. A prayer vigil will be held Monday at 7 p.m. at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel, where friends will be received at that time. REES, Charles W., 96, of Lexington, died Friday, May 24, 1996. He was born in Rockbridge Co., February 8, 1900, and was the son of the late Thomas S. Rees and Henritta Firebaugh Rees. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Tyree Rees. Mr. Re es was a member of the Lexington Presbyterian Church and a former member of the Board of Directors of Rockbridge National Bank (Now Crestar) in Lexington. He was one of the Principal owners of J. Ed Deaver & Sons, a Retail Clothing Store and Retired when the Store closed in 1978. He is survived by a niece, Mary Rees Cotten of Newport News; two great-nieces, Mary C. Kay of Brownsburg and Sally Rees Cotten of Newport News; and a great-nephews, Thomas W. Rees III of Madison. He was born in Honaker, Va., (Russell County) on July 8, 1910 and was the son of the late Marion Harvey Settle and Carrie Balmer Settle. He was a graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University where he graduated as an electrical engineer with honors in mathematics. He was a veteran of WWII having entered the Army as a Reserve Second Lieutenant in 1941. He was active in both the European and Pacific Theater of Operations. After six years of service he was discharged with the rank of Major. He was a retired employee of Appalachian Power Company with thirty years of service where he served as Station Supervisor in Bluefield, W.Va., District Supertintendent, Welch, W.Va., and Pulaski Division Superintendent in Pulaski. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Pulaski and served as past president of the Methodist Mens Club. He was a member of the VPI Alumni Association, the Hokie Club and a member of the ``Old Guard"" at VPI. He was on the Founding Board of the Fine Arts Center of the New River Valley. He was chairman of the Pulaski County Electoral Board and was active in the Democratic Party where he was a member of the Pulaski County Democratic Committee. He was a memver of Phi Kappa Phi Fraternity. Surviving are his wife, Louise Settle, Pulaski; goddaughter, Laura Martin, Newport; several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 28, 1996 from the Russell Memorial Cemetery, Lebanon, Va., with the Rev. Norman Wilhoit officiating. There will be no visitation. SUTTON, Marion Fogg, 74, of Roanoke, died Friday, May 24, 1996, in a local hospital. Mrs. Sutton was an active member of Greene Memorial United Methodist Church, and a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Surviving are her husband, William D. Sutton; daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Anne and Herbert Hastings of Roanoke, and Amy and John McPhilamy of Merritt Island, Fla., and grandchildren, Noah and Kelly Hastings of Roanoke, and John McPhilamy II of Merritt Island, Fla. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 28, 1996, at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel, with the Revs. Bob Watts, Nelson Harris, Walter M. Lockett Jr. and D. C. Craig officiating. THOMPSON, Oakie Harold, 74, of 1716 Clay Street, S.E., Roanoke, and formerly of Bluewell, died Thursday, May 23, 1996, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Born on June 13, 1921, in Bluefield, W.Va., he was the son of the late Robert and Ollie Thompson. Mr. Thompson had been a resident of Roanoke for 19 years, and was a former taxi cab driver for Bluefield Cab. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and was preceded in death by three brothers, Weldon, Archie and Hubert Thompson. Survivors include his wife, Virginia Mae Osborne Thompson of Roanoke; two sons, Harold Thompson and Daniel Thompson of Roanoke; a daughter, Pamela Milliner of Roanoke; three stepsons, Ricky Lawson and Dallas Lawson of Roanoke, and Darrell Lawson of Bastian; a stepdaughter, Sharon Green of Roanoke; a sister, Virgie Peters of Florida; three brothers, Sidney Thompson of Bedford, Ralph Thompson of Norfolk and Garland Thompson of Arkansas; 18 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 28, 1996, at the Cravens-Shires Funeral Home Chapel in Bluewell, with Jerry Lester officiating. UPDIKE, Elizabeth Bryant, (``Libby""), 65, of Roanoke, was taken home by God's angels on Saturday, May 25, 1996. She was a member of Red Hill Baptist Church. She was a dev oted wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She is survived by her husband, E. K. (``Gene"") Updike of Roanoke; son and daughter-in-law, Danny and Sue Updike of Roanoke; daughter and son-in-law, Vickie and Russell Walters of Vinton; sister, Mary Carlisle of Roanoke; brothers, Andrew Bryant of Roanoke, Dewey Bryant of Las Vegas, Nev., Larry Bryant of Roanoke; grandchildren, Dustin Walters of Vinton, and Jason and Cody Updike of Roanoke, a very special sister and brother-in-law, Louise and Wilbur Mann of Roanoke; a host of nephews and nieces, and many close friends. Services will be conducted at Lotz Roanoke Chapel at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 28, with the Rev. Gary Kingery officiating. Interment will be in Mountain View Cemetery. WRIGHT, Deborah Gail Stowers, 41, of Natural Bridge Station, died Saturday, May 25, 1996 in the Stonewall Jackson Hospital. Mrs. Wright was born October 6, 1954 in Bluefield, W.Va. a daughter of Howard Stowers and Mi ldred Puckett Stowers of Rocky Gap, Va. She was a member of the Arnolds Valley Southern Baptist Church. Surviving in addition to her parents include her husband, Arthur Lee Wright, Natural Bridge Station; four sons, Christopher Lee Wright, Barry Robert Wright, Brian Howard Wright, Brennan Claude Lewis Wright all of Natural Bridge Station; a brother, Barry Stowers, Rocky Gap; a sister, Jennie Blankinship, Rocky Gap.
