3-VEHICLE CRASH INJURES 4, STOPS U.S. 220 TRAFFIC

A three-vehicle accident shut down northbound U.S. 220 for two hours Sunday night and sent four people to the hospital, police said.

Gary Hodges, 46, of Boones Mill was heading south on U.S. 220 near Yellow Mountain Road in Roanoke County about 9:30 p.m. when he lost control of his pickup truck and crossed the median, Officer S.M. Belanger said.

Hodges hit a Lexington couple's car head on, then turned sideways and grazed a second car, police said. Hodges was not seriously injured.

Wayne Wampler, 37, the driver of the first car, was in stable condition at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. His 41-year-old wife, Yvonne, was not seriously injured.

The driver of the other car, Marvin Shorter, 28, of Roanoke was not seriously injured.

Police continue to investigate the accident.
