ADLER, Sara Ward, 76, of Marion, died Sunday, May 26, 1996 in Smyth County Community Hospital. She was the widow of M. M. ``Mike"" Adler. She was a member of the Ladies Auxilliary of the Marion Life Saving Crew. Surviving include one sister, Dorothy Sturgill of Marion; one nephew, Kenny Sturgill, Marion; one stepson, Alan B. Adler, Claremont, Calif.; two sisters-in-law, Ellinore Adler and Byrnice Condy both of Atlanta, Ga. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Mday 29, 1996 at Seaver-Bro wn Chapel with Dr. William A. Slater officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Lawn Cemetery. BOWLES, Donald Irvin, 62, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, May 26, 1996, at his home. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, William D. and Mamie T. Bowles; a sister, Ann Cary; and brother, Calvin T. Bowles. Surviving are his wife of 33 years, Wanda H. Bowles; a daughter and son-in-law, Jill and Greg Lane, Roanoke; son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Sandra Bowles; stepgrandson, Cody Turman, all of Blue Ridge; brothers and their wives, Holly and Reba Bowles, John and Rita Bowles; sisters, Virginia I. Bowles, Nellie Gross and husband, Frank, Alpha Hardy and Mary Gibson; several nieces and nephews. He was a long time member of the Riverdale Baptist Church where he served as a youth Sunday School teacher, deacon and choir member, and in other capacities. He was a graduate of William Byrd High School and Virginia Polytechnical Institute in Blacksburg, and a member of the R.O.T.C. He also served in the United States Air Force. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 29, at Riverdale Baptist Church, with his pastor, the Rev. Robert W. Lanier officiating, with burial in Mountain View Cemetery, Vinton. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Lotz Roanoke Chapel. BUTTERWORTH, Evelyn Toler, 81, of Floyd, passed away Monday, May 27, 1996 at her home. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Barner Butterworth, who was Sheriff of Dinwiddie Co. until 1958. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Howard B. and Nell Butterworth, Prince George Co., Va., Robert T. and Janet Butterworth, Copper Hill; one brother, Ocie Jernigan, Houston, Texas; two grandsons; two granddaughters; one great-grands on and one great-granddaughter. CARTER, Bobby Echols, 62, of Roanoke, died Sunday, May 26, 1996. He was a member of Woodlawn United Methodist Church and a longtime employee of the State Health Department. COLLINS, Roy Hammett, 80, of Christiansburg, passed away early Sunday, May 26, 1996 at his home. The funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday from the Christiansburg Presbyterian Church, conducted by Dr. O. CULLIFER, Willis Neal, Jr., 71, of Virginia Beach, died in a nursing home after a long illness on Monday, May 27, 1996. R. Cullifer was born in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, the son of Willis Neal Cullifer, Sr. of Rocky Mount and Bessie Bragg Cullifer of Ocracoke, North Carolina, who both preceded him in death. He served in the U. S. Navy from 1943 through 1945, after which he attended and graduated from the College of William and Mary. He was retired from Crockin-Levy Furniture Company after a 29 year tenure. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Peggy Wilcox Cullifer of Virginia Beach; a daughter, Deborah Cullifer Garcia of Merritt Island, Florida; two sons and daughters-in-law, William Neal Cullifer and his wife, Janet Goodrich Cullifer and Eric Gregory Cullifer and his wife, Georgia Mildenberg Cullifer, all of Virginia Beach; plus four grandchildren, Brandon Garcia, Chris Cullifer, Michael Cullifer and Shannon Marie Cullifer. Additionally, he is survived by three sisters and brothers-in-law, Laura and Thomas J. East, Diane and Bill Kemp and Dolores and Thomas Snead, all of Virginia Beach. He also had four sisters-in-law and one brother-in-law, Nellie Wilcox Yates, Margaret Wilcox Yates, Herbert and Mary Ann Wilcox, all of Roanoke and Rocky Mount, Virginia; plus many nieces and nephews. FAULKNER, Roy Thomas, 79, of Rt. 1, Box 168, Pearisburg, formerly of Bramwell, died Sunday, May 26, 1996 at the Meadow Brook Nursing Home in Shawsville, Va. Born on November 9, 1916 in Vivian, W. Va. he was the son of the late Luther Gordon and Laura Belle Webb Faulkner. Mr. Faulkner had been a resident of Pearisburg, Va. for 18 years and had formerly made his home in Bramwell and McDowell County, W. Va. He was a disabled coal miner, having worked for 30 years and he was a member of the U.M.W.A.

He was of the Protestant faith and was preceded in death by a daughter, brother, sister and a grandson. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Wilson Faulkner of Pearisburg; six daughters, Shelby Farley, Roanoke, Patricia Miller, Pearisburg, Sharon Punturi, Montcalm, W. Va., Paula Patterson, Freeman, W. Va., Kathy Sabo, Freeman, W. Va., Sheila Harris, Radford; three sons, Robert Faulkner, Richard Faulkner, both of Floyd, Va., Danny Faulkner, Bluewell, W.Va.; six sisters, Della Summers, Abbs Valley, Va., Margie Lambert, Speedway, Va., Lorraine Farley, Bluefield, W. HUDGINS, Edward Burton, (``Burt""), 72, of Roanoke, died Saturday, May 25, 1996. He served in the U. S. Marine Corps, and was stationed in the Pacific during World War II. He was a 32nd degree Mason and member of Virginia Heights Masonic Lodge #324, Roanoke. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Ann Hudgins of Roanok e; his mother, Amy Stovall Hudgins; daughter, Lydia Hudgins Morris and husband David, and triplet granddaughters, all of Richmond; his stepdaughter, Vanessa Bridges, and three stepgrandchildren, all of Smithfield, N.C. LANKFORD, Winifred Pauline LeBleu, 74, of 4218 Woodvale Circle, S.W., passed away Sunday, May 26, 1996. She was a member of Windsor Hills United Methodist Church and retired from Contracting Enter prises. Mrs. Lankford served in the Womens Army Corps during WWII. Surviving are her husband, Howard H. Lankford, Roanoke; sister and brother-in-law, Martha L. and Lt. Col. Gordon K. Smith, Ret. of Baton Rouge, Lo; brother, Harry W. MEREDITH, John Berkley, (``Jack""), 71, of 600 Gloucester Road, Stuarts Draft, died Sunday, May 26, 1996 at The University of Virginia Hospital. He is survived by his wife, Isabelle Lewellyn Meredith; one son and daughter-in-law and two graddaughters, John Berkley Jr. and Betty Baylor Meredith, Erin and Kelly of Virginia Beach; two stepsons and a daughter-in-law, Terry D. Sumey of Lynchburg and Randy Lewellyn and Teri Ritchie Sumey of Weyers Cave; three brothers, Hal J. Meredith Jr. of Front Royal, Gen. W. Thomas Meredith of Smith Mountain Lake and Edward Andy Meredith of Elon College, N.C.; and a sister, Jeanne Meredith Busse of Charlottesville. He was preceded in death by a stepson, Robin S. Sumey and a brother, Clayton T. ``Amos"" Meredith. Mr. Meredith was born February 20, 1925 in Leesburg, Va., son of the late Hal James and Kathryn Thurman Meredith. He attended Elon College and was graduated from James Madison Unviversity. He served two and a half years in the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theatre in World War II. Mr. Meredith owned Quality Improvements, Inc. and Meredith Rent-A-Space and had taught in the public schools of Virginia for fifteen years. He was active in many civic and professional organizations. Mr. Meredith was a past deacon of Tinkling Spring Presbyterian Church, a past president of the Waynesboro Exchange Club, a founding member of the Stuarts Draft Business Association, a charter member of three-term president and first Life Member of the Augusta Home Builders Association whose annual motivational award bears his name. He ws one of the first in Virginia to receive the CGR (Certified Graduate Remodeler) designation. He held every major office in the Home Builders Association of Virginia and was State President in 1988. He had served on the council of the National Home Builders Association. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 28 from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at Etter-Reynolds Funeral Home, Waynesboro Chapel. The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 29 at Tinkling Spring Presbyterian Church with Dr. Fred A. Holbrook officiating and Steve Frazier assisting. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. MILLER, Aileen Overstreet, 75, of Huddleston and formerly of Vinton, passed away Sunday, May 26, 1996 in Raleigh Court Health Care Center. Aileen was bor n in Vinton on January 12, 1921 a daughter of the late Harvey Rufus Overstreet and Evvie Eliza Gray Overstreet. She was preceded in death by her husband, James W. Miller of Huddleston. Aileen was a member of Patmos United Methodist Church where she participated in many church activities. Aileen is survived by two brothers, Warren Overstreet, Richmond and Siebert Overstreet, Vinton; one sister, Lois Overstreet Gray, Virginia Beach and a brother-in-law, Sam B. Miller, Huddleston. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 29, 1996 at Patmos United Methodist Church by the Rev. Tom Jackson with interment in the church cemetery. PARCHA, Stephen Edward, 38, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, May 26, 1996, at Lewis-Gale Hospital. He loved music and was a talented musician. Stephen is survived by his mother, Sylvia M. Parcha, Roanoke and formerly of England; father, Edward Frank Parcha, Florida; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Michael C. and Kelley S. Parcha, David R. Parcha, all of Roanoke, Edward F. Jr. and Roberta C. Parcha, Hardy; two nephews and two nieces; aunt and uncle, Dolores and Ted Bober, Pennsylvania; also surviving a re numerous relatives in England. POFF, Geneva F., 87, of Roanoke, went home to be with the Lord Sunday, May 26, 1996. Born December 16, 1908 in Augusta County, she was a daughter of the late William Preston Strain and Lena Catherine Reese Strain. Mrs. Poff was a graduate of Jefferson High School, Cornett Business School and LaSalle Extension University. She received certificates in various classes including Comtomoter, Typing Speed, Junior Accounting, and Income Tax Preparation. During the depression, she worked as a floor lady at Puritan Mills in Roanoke a position that she held until 1946. From 1950 to 1954 Mrs. Poff was employed be Reliable Bookkeeping and Tax Service. From February of 1954 to February 1973, she worked as a Statistical and Fiscal Supervisor for the Department of Social Services of City of the Roanoke. Mrs. Poff was a long time member of Melrose Baptist Church having been baptized August 8, 1926 by Dr. H. W. Connelly. Through the years she served her church in many capacities. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Poff was preceded in death by her stepmother, Esther Webb Strain; brother and sister-in-law, Elmer Preston Strain and Mary Rodgers Strain; sister and brother-in-law, Virginia Strain Plunkett and Kenneth Reese Plunkett; a half brother, William Forrest Strain; and a half sister, Esther Ermadell Strain Friend. Surviving are her husband, Alfred L. Poff; a very special foster daughter and her husband, Elaine J. and David Meador, Roanoke; granddaughter, Laura Saunders and husband, Glenn, Roanoke; great-grandchildren, Kayleigh Miles and Andrew Saunders; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Dora P. and Bob Jennings, Roanoke; sister-in-law, Agnes P. Roberson, Roanoke; aunt, Virginia Reese McCoy, Stuarts Draft; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins including many on her husband's side of the family. STURGILL, Ora Vinton, (``O. V.""), 80, of Chilhowie, died Monday, May 27, 1996 at the Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was a member and lifetime trustee of Chilhowie Baptist Church, a member of the Gideon's Marion Camp, a member of the Appalachian Antique Automobile Club in Bristol and was a lover of gospel music. He is survived by his wife, Leola Blevins Sturgill, Chilhowie; two daughters, Mrs. Clarence ``Pat"" Smith, Saltville, Mrs. Walter ``Bookie"" Foulke, Union Springs, N.Y.; three sons, Arlen V. Sturgill, Richard F. ``Dick"" Sturgill both of Chilhowie, Rev. Cecil C. Sturgill, Kingsport, Tenn.; sister, Mattie Moxley, Marion; brother, Herman L. Sturgill, Saltville; 18 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and many other relatives. WREN, Gertrude S., 90, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, May 25, 1996. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 29, 1996 at the Hamlar-Curtis Chapel with the Rev. Herman Word officiating. Burial will be in Williams Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Wednesday one hour prior to the service. Friends may call the funeral home also on Tuesday.
