Virginia's men's lacrosse team had three players named to the Division I All-America first team, the Cavaliers' first since 1988.
Attackman Doug Knight, the leading scorer in Division I, was joined on the first team by fellow attackman Michael Watson and defenseman Tommy Smith. All are juniors.
Senior attackman Tim Whiteley, who holds the UVa record for points in a career, was named second-team All-American. Virginia midfielders David Curry, Chris Ginter and Drew Melchionni were named honorable mention.
The last previous first-team All-American from Virginia was midfielder Andy Kraus in 1988. Watson and Knight moved up from the second team in 1995, when Smith made the third team.
Whiteley made the second team in 1994 and third team in 1995.
Seven of the 11 first-team All-Americans this year were from ACC schools, including two each from North Carolina and Maryland.
