HOMER HURTS AVALANCHE SALEM DROPS 6-3 DECISION

Michael Evans hit a two-run homer to key a four-run eighth inning that vaulted the Wilmington Blue Rocks past the Salem Avalanche 6-3 in a Carolina League game Monday afternoon.

Salem (29-22) led 3-2 heading into the eighth before Wilmington (28-24) rallied against Salem's bullpen. After Evans homered off reliever Todd Genke (3-2) to put Wilmington ahead 4-3, Ramy Brooks doubled and former GW-Danville player Al Shirley greeted Zack Sawyer with a single.

Carlos Mendez rapped a run-scoring single and Sergio Nunez followed with an RBI double.

Shirley had two hits, including his sixth home run. Three of Shirley's homers have come against the Avalanche.

Doug Walls was impressive in his first start for Salem since undergoing shoulder surgery. Walls, who spent half of last season in Salem, allowed two hits and two runs while striking out eight in four innings of work. The right-hander had been in extended spring training before joining the Avalanche.

John Giudice led Salem at the plate with two hits.

The Avalanche and Blue Rocks resume their series today. Salem's Mike Vavrek (5-1) will face Phil Grundy (2-5).
