CHECK YOUR E-TEA-QUETTE

Intimidated by the prospect of taking tea? Here are some tips from people in the know:

Arrive on time. Tea shouldn't be kept sitting.

Serve or let the guest of honor be served first.

At a small gathering, wait for everyone to receive tea before getting your food.

Sip a little tea before getting your food.

If all courses are out, you may take all at once or come back for different servings.

Eat slowly.

Flowers, tea, biscuits or other tea-related items make nice hostess gifts, if you wish to bring one. Don't expect gift foods to be immediately served.

At a hotel, 15 percent to 20 percent of the tab is appropriate if you wish to tip your server.

Only tip the musician if he or she plays your special musical request. Use your discretion as to amount, or follow what is visible in musician's tip container.

Crooking your pinky finger while sipping your tea is optional.

When in doubt, follow the lead of your host or hostess.
