A former RiverDawg and a former Patrick Henry High School standout spoiled Roanoke's Wednesday night as the Hampton Roads Mariners topped the RiverDawgs 4-1 at Cave Spring Junior High School.
PH graduate Lang Wedemeyer scored two goals and 1995 RiverDawg Byron Mitchell added one as the USISL Select League team sent Roanoke (4-3 overall, 1-2 Premier League) to its second straight loss. The RiverDawgs scored the first goal of the game at 10:34 of the first half when Ian Spooner got on the board with an assist from Grayson Prillaman.
``I thought we outplayed them in the first half,'' Roanoke coach Ed McMichael said. ``The 4-1 score is misleading. They got two goals when we were pushing up. But it's good to see we can play with a team at this level.''
RiverDawgs goalie Aaron Ewert stopped 10 shots, while Mariners keeper Matt Olson stopped four.
