CITY DAY-CARE A WELL-KEPT SECRET

Dear Neighbors:|

My son attends Highland Park Child Development Center at Highland Park Magnet School. H.P.C.D.C., in cooperation with the Roanoke Valley YMCA, is a day care for the children of Roanoke city school employees. It has been in operation for several years, and now the staff and parents have been told it may not reopen for the 1996-97 school year.

H.P.C.D.C. began as a day care for the children of employees only. It was later made available to those outside of the school system. It is an exceptional and unique program with a wonderful teaching team of three: Stacie Wright, Rachel Collins and Ellen Janney. We are lucky to have these three exceptional teachers.

However, the majority of Roanoke city school employees are not even aware there is an employee day care available to them. This "benefit" must be the best-kept secret in the whole school system! How are employees supposed to utilize this benefit if they are not even aware of it?

The staff and parents at H.P.C.D.C. addressed the School Board with this issue in March with no response. We have even taken it upon ourselves to hold an open house for the employees. Why won't Dr. Harris and the School Board members help publicize this benefit instead of hiding it? H.P.C.D.C. is something Roanoke city schools should be proud of. |Lisa T. Cundiff |Roanoke
