|CHURCH PEOPLE| The Rev. Charles C. Briscoe, pastor of Covenant Community Church in Salem, has been elected president of the Roanoke Valley Evangelical Ministers Association; he will serve for two years. Other officers of the valley's unit of the National Association of Evangelicals are the Rev. Stephen Dye of Emmanuel Baptist Church, vice president; the Rev. Todd Atkins of Faith Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Salem, secretary, and Harold Sumner of Roanoke Valley Church of Christ, treasurer. The EMC meets for a prayer breakfast at The Roanoker Restaurant on the first Thursday in the months from September through May.

The Rev. George Chioros, new pastor of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, and his wife Flora will be honored at a reception Sunday following the 11 a.m. liturgy at the church at 30 Huntington Blvd. N.E. The congregation is celebrating Trinity Sunday, which the name of the parish recognizes. The Chioros family came from Lanham, Md.

The Rev. Lucinda Barnum-Steggerda of Daleville has been chosen interim pastor of Central Church of the Brethren in downtown Roanoke beginning in mid-July. The Rev. David Yingling, Central's pastor for the past 20 years, will leave then to serve a church in York, Pa.

Education for Ministry, a four-year seminary extension program from the School of Theology of the University of the South in Sewanee, Tenn., has been completed by six adults from Roanoke Valley congregations. The study of Scripture, Christian history and current theological issues helps prepare lay people for parish leadership, and does not lead to ordination. The graduates include Susan Honeycutt and Carol Tate of Calvary Baptist of Roanoke; Wanda Myers of St. Paul's Episcopal in Salem; Shirley Owens of St. John's Episcopal in Roanoke; Eleanor Roller of First Church of the Brethren in Roanoke, and Gin Webber of Christ Episcopal in Roanoke.

The Rev. Don Summerville, a graduate of Bluefield and Carson-Newman colleges and ordained by his home congregation of Salem Baptist Church, has been chosen as pastor of Riverland Road Baptist congregation. Summerville has been interim minister there for the past six months.

Betty West, a part-time preschool teacher at Baptist Community Center in inner-city Roanoke, is leaving the staff after 12 years. She was honored for her work in the free classes at a recent banquet for volunteers at the two centers. |MUSICAL EVENTS| The Choice, a dramatic musical, will be performed Saturday and Sunday at 7 p.m. at Cave Spring Baptist Church, 4873 Brambleton Ave. The combined choirs and the church orchestra will be featured. New Grace, a Roanoke gospel group, will sing Sunday at 11 a.m. for Friend Day at First Church of God on Hardy Road in Vinton.

The Perry Sisters, gospel musicians, are scheduled to perform Sunday at 6:30 p.m. at New Grace Baptist Church, 1214 Peters Creek Road N.W. |BUILDING CHANGES| West Salem Baptist Church at 500 Turner Road in Salem has begun a campaign to raise $2.4 million for a worship center seating 1,000, additional education rooms, basement renovation, elevator and, if the full amount is secured, a new education wing. The new construction will be on the present property; earlier the congregation had considered relocating.

First United Methodist Church in downtown Salem has completed a renovation project begun last year costing $280,000. Painting inside and out, new carpeting and windows, renovation of an office and the installation of restrooms on the lower floor for those in wheelchairs has been covered. |OUTREACH| The Alma Hunt Cottage, a home for mentally retarded women at the Baptist Children's Home and Family Services in Salem, has been completed, with 243 volunteers from 53 churches in the Roanoke Valley Association of Southern Baptists doing the work. Total cost of the project is $160,000. Six residents have been selected from many applicants and will move in soon. Dedication will take place in the late summer.

Seeds for Africa are being collected by several Roanoke Valley United Methodist congregations for shipment by Aug. 15 to the war-torn African countries of Liberia and Sierra Leone. The seeds are being distributed by the ecumenical Church World Service relief agency based in New Windsor, Md.

Roanoke Area Ministries, an ecumenical service agency for the needy based at 824 Campbell Ave. S.W., is seeking youth 14 and older as volunteers during the summer. They will help with the preparation and serving of meals to homeless people at the day shelter and for other tasks. Call Judy Diehl, 345-9786 for more information. |SPECIAL EVENTS| Bishop Thomas B. Stockton, spiritual and administrative leader of Methodists in the Virginia Conference, will preach June 9 at 11 a.m. at Woodlawn United Methodist Church, 2922 Corbieshaw Road S.W. The parish is celebrating its 50th anniversary. Stockton, of Richmond, will retire in June.

Edgewood Christian Church, 1006 Peck St. N.W., has scheduled a staff member of Johnson Bible College, Dean Davis, to preach Sunday at the 6:30 p.m. worship. The speaker is a former missionary to Africa.

Father's Day open house is scheduled Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Catholic Historical Society quarters at 624 N. Jefferson St.

A special Mass to receive new members of Court St. Patrick, Catholic Daughters of America, is scheduled Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Andrew's Church on North Jefferson Street. The Roanoke group will be joined by members of Our Lady of Lourdes court in Blacksburg.

Garden Fest, six Sunday evening outdoor family recreation programs sponsored by Virginia Heights Baptist Church, will begin Sunday. They are from 6 to 8 and are held in the church's garden on Grandin Road at Memorial Avenue Southwest. Programs include gospel music, clown and magic shows and refreshments. Featured Sunday will be Pinnacle, a music group. All events are free and will be moved inside if it rains. Call 344-7748 for a schedule.

A Mass in Spanish each Sunday at 11:30 a.m. will be conducted at St. Gerard's Catholic Church, 809 Orange Ave. N.W. beginning Sunday.
