LET THE COW QUIPS BEGIN!

What does a two-headed cow say?

Moo. Moo.

Why did the cow say "oink"?

She was learning a second language.

Why did the cow cross the road?

Because the chicken retired and moved to Florida.

Don't stop now! You'll have plenty of time to let the quips fall where they may Saturday at the Christiansburg High School Athletic Foundation's latest fund-raiser.

Yes, it's "Cow Patty Bingo," an event to help support sports at the school. It's also your chance to bring home the big bread. The grand prize is $1,000.

In order to win, you have to buy a ticket for a bingo square on the school's football field and wait for Bossy to make a deposit. If your square is the recipient of the first through third down payments, you'll win one of the three cash prizes. In addition to the grand prize, there's a second-place award of $500 and a third-place award of $250.

Tickets are $5 each or $20 for a book of five. You can get them in advance from CHS students and athletic boosters or buy them at the gate Saturday.

The fun runs from 9 a.m. to noon and includes country bands, track races and a live broadcast by WPSK. Door prizes contributed by local businesses will be drawn throughout the morning.

ITCHING TO GO: Hop in the car and head for the New River Valley Fairgrounds. The gigantic Pulaski County Flea Market, sponsored by the Dublin Lions Club, is Saturday and Sunday.

Crafts, antiques, attic treasures - you'll find everything under the sun at this event. Wear your comfortable walking shoes. You'll need them if you plan to visit all 800 of the spaces set up at the fairgrounds.

Come early. A good breakfast should help you start your engine. The Lions Club will begin serving at 6 a.m., and concessions will be available throughout the day.

Gate admission is $1 and kids under 6 get in free. The site is on Virginia 100 north of Dublin. To get there from Interstate 81, take Exit 98.

PUTTING ON THE DOG: The New River Valley Kennel Club's eighth annual dog show and obedience trial is Saturday at Virginia Tech. Dogs from around the country will prance over to the recreation fields at Southgate and Tech Center Drive.

The show, put on with the help of the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine, features 700 AKC champion and would-be champion dogs. The canines vie for titles in breed conformation and obedience competition.

Admission for spectators is free. Lunch and snacks will be available at the concession stands.

The competition starts at 9 a.m. and continues into the afternoon when judges will select the "Best in Show" winner. For more information on the event, call 951-8513.

FOR THE CHILDREN: Crowds will gather at the Lincoln Memorial Saturday to launch the nation's first "Stand for Children Day," a demonstration of support for little ones across the country.

Here at home you can celebrate by bringing the kids to a summer safety party sponsored by Columbia Montgomery Regional Hospital's Emergency Department.

The get-together's from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the hospital in Blacksburg. Guests include sports team and agency mascots from around the region. Local sports celebrities will be there to sign autographs, too.

Shiny fire truck displays, dance and karate demonstrations and tours of the ER's pediatric room are part of the activities. The Montgomery County Health Department will be there to give kids free immunizations. Parents, be sure you bring your child's immunization records with you.

BIG BAND, BIG DANCE: The Casa Blanca Orchestra, a 17-piece combo with a "Big Band" sound, performs Saturday for a dance at Virginia Tech's Commonwealth Ballroom. It's the grand finale for a weekend workshop on ballroom dancing.

The dance runs from 7:30 to 11:30 p.m. Even if you didn't participate in the workshop, you can still come to the ball.

Tickets are $15 per person and will be available at the door. Commonwealth Ballroom is in Squires Student Center.

THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE...the Lyric Theatre for a trip down memory lane!

The grand old movie house on Blacksburg's College Avenue is where you'll find that all-time favorite family film, "The Wizard of Oz." Sure, you've seen it on TV, but now's your chance to catch the Judy Garland classic on the big screen. You'll feel like you stepped (way) back in time.

"The Wizard of Oz" shows today through Sunday at 7:30 p.m. All tickets are $3.
