FLOYD RADIO STATION WILL FEATURE MUSICAL VIRGINIANS

What do Ricky Van Shelton, Pasty Cline, Roy Clark, Wayne Newton, The Carter Family and The Statler Brothers have in common? All of the nationally known artists were born in Virginia.

The music of these and other Virginia born musicians will be featured in a two-hour radio program honoring Virginia's musicians and colorful history in song. The program will be presented on Floyd radio station WGFC 1030 AM from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday. Music from local groups also will be played.

Patsy Cline was born in Gore (near Winchester); Ricky Van Shelton was born in Grit (near Danville); the members of The Carter Family are from Southwest Virginia. The Statler Brothers are from Staunton and the Roanoke area; Roy Clark was born in Meherrin (Prince Edward County) and Wayne Newton grew up in Roanoke.

For the last 11 years the station has hosted a two-hour program to help raise funds for the American Cancer Society The idea for a program about Virginia-born musicians came from WGFC disc jockey Dale Gallimore and Bert Hatcher, a music collector and historian. They will co-host the program. The program is dedicated to the American Cancer Society and is sponsored by the Floyd Chapter. Tapes of the program are available. Call Hatcher at 335-1490.
