First Union National Bank said Thursday it has elected two new directors for the board directing its Virginia, Maryland and Washington, D.C., operations, which are based in Roanoke.
Named were John Ray, a member of the Washington City Council, and Janet Hill, a corporate consultant.
Hill is vice president of Alexander & Associates Inc., a firm that provides advice in the areas of human resource planning, corporate responsibility, corporate communications and government relations.
Earlier in her career, she served as a special assistant to the secretary of the Army, working closely with officials at the White House, Congress and a variety of government agencies.
Ray is an at-large member of the Washington council, an elected office he has held since 1979. He is currently chairman pro tempore of the district's governing authority.
Ray also is a partner in the Washington law firm of Manatt Phelps & Phillips, specializing in health-care issues. He provides counsel to hospitals, health maintenance organizations and other health-related services.
Before joining the law firm, he served as counsel to the Senate's Antitrust and Monopolies Subcommittee and as an attorney with the Office of Legal Counsel at the Justice Department.
"These are two outstanding additions to our board," said Warner Dalhouse, chairman of First Union in Virginia, Maryland and Washington. "Each brings a wealth of knowledge and experience that will greatly benefit First Union's operations throughout the region."
Ben Jenkins, the bank's president, called Hill and Ray "outstanding leaders who have consistently demonstrated a commitment to excellence throughout their careers."
