Huckabee to serve out Ark. governor term
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Republican Lt. Gov. Mike Huckabee dropped out of the Senate race Thursday to serve out the 21/2 years left in disgraced Gov. Jim Guy Tucker's term, saying ``this is no time for the captain to jump ship for another boat.''
``Duty comes ahead of personal desire,'' said Huckabee, who automatically becomes governor upon Tucker's resignation. ``We've got to rebuild faith in government.''
His decision could jeopardize what Republican leaders say is their best chance for their first U.S. Senate seat in Arkansas since Reconstruction. Huckabee was the front-runner in the race.
Tucker, a Democrat, was convicted Tuesday of conspiracy and fraud in the Whitewater case and promptly announced he would resign by July 15. He could get up to 10 years in prison.

Kathie Lee clothes contractor fined
WASHINGTON - The New York garment shop contractor that produced apparel for Wal-Mart bearing the Kathie Lee label has been fined $22,000 and is liable for $47,000 in back wages, the Labor Department said Thursday.
Kathie Lee Gifford said on her syndicated TV show, ``Live With Regis & Kathie Lee,'' that she became physically sick when she learned the 45 garment workers at Seo Fashions had been underpaid.
Karen Crowe, spokeswoman for the Union of Needle Trades, Industrial and Textile Employees, said Seo paid its workers below minimum wage and did not grant overtime, although the employees worked up to 60 hours a week.
Dishwashers being recalled
WASHINGTON - Half a million Whirlpool and Kenmore dishwashers are being recalled because wiring in the door latches may overheat and catch fire.
Affected Whirlpool brands have model numbers beginning with DU8, DP8, DU9 and GDP. Kenmore brands have model numbers that start with 665.
Both brands have serial numbers ranging from FA2400000 to FA5299999, or from FB0100000 through FB1899999.
Owners of Whirlpool dishwashers should call (800)874-9481 to arrange for ree repair. Consumers who bought either brand of dishwasher from Sears will be contacted by the company, which will schedule repairs at no cost. Sears customers also may call (800)927-1625.
