Wright house to reopen in Mount Vernon

The Pope-Leighey House in Mount Vernon, Va., designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, is scheduled to reopen Saturday, commemorating the 129th anniversary of Wright's birth. The house has been closed for 13 months so it could be moved 30 feet and restored in its new site.

The house, built in 1940 for Loren Pope, a copy editor for The Washington Star, and later sold to Marjorie and Robert Leighey, residents of Northern Virginia, is an example of Wright's Usonian style house, the architect's name for the homes he designed for working-class people.

Built of cypress, brick and glass, the house exhibits many of the contributions Wright made to contemporary architecture. It is 1,200 square feet and has two bedrooms, one bath, a living room, a kitchen and a study.

The Pope-Leighey House is open daily from March to December; weekends only in January and February. The house is at 9000 Richmond Highway, at the intersection of U.S. 1 and Virginia 235 North, in Mount Vernon. Admission is $6, $4 for children and senior citizens. Information: (703) 780-4000.

Amtrak offers discount to attract families

Amtrak is encouraging family train travel by offering a half-price discount, through the month of September, for the second adult in a family of three or more traveling together. Tickets must be purchased by June 15.

The half-price deal is good on nearly all train service in the Northeast Corridor except for weekday Metroliners, and the special ``family fare'' is in addition to Amtrak's existing half-price fares for children 2 to 15 years old.

Families account for nearly 40 percent of all traveling in the Northeast Corridor, according to Amtrak.

For details or reservations, contact Amtrak at 800-872-7245.
