Josh Stephens' two-run homer in the top of the first inning was Giles' only hit of the game, but it was enough as the Spartans captured the Region C baseball championship with a 2-1 victory Saturday over Grayson County in Bristol.
Giles (20-1), which snapped Grayson County's 20-game winning streak, will play host to St. Paul's on Tuesday in a Group A quarterfinal. The Blue Devils (21-2) will travel to Powell Valley, the Region D champion, for a quarterfinal game Tuesday at 7 p.m.
Ben Brown led off the game with a walk off Grayson County starter Kevin Dalton. Stephens followed with a blast that proved to be the game-winner.
The walk and the homer were the only ones allowed by Dalton, who struck out 10. Just one runner reached for Giles the rest of the game, and that was on an error.
Neal Mustard (7-0) picked up the win, going the distance while allowing one run on five hits. He struck out six and walked five, and got out of two bases-loaded jams, allowing just one run.
The Blue Devils' only run came in the fourth when Mustard walked the bases loaded with one out. Chip Pack scored on an RBI groundout by Derek Phipps, but the Blue Devils, who left 10 men on base, could not take advantage of numerous opportunities.
Chad Shaffner and Wes Self had two hits each for Grayson County.
SOFTBALL Late run dooms Knights
Stonewall-Jackson scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to edge Cave Spring 2-1 in the Northwest Region softball championship game in Manassas.
The Knights (22-3) trailed 1-0 going into the seventh before Sarah Ogilvie tripled and scored on Kari Whitney's RBI single. The Knights managed just three hits for the game.
Kerry Fair (10-2) was the loser for Cave Spring despite going the distance and giving up two runs on five hits.
Both teams advance to the Group AAA tournament next week.
