The Roanoke Star under-13 White soccer team, founded in 1986, reached a milestone Sunday when it won its first Virginia Youth Soccer Association state championship.
Roanoke defeated the defending state champion under-13 Midlothian Blast 1-0 at Striker Park in Richmond. Roanoke's goal was scored by Matt Dishner on a crossing assist from Michael Kraemer. The Star held off the Blast thanks to strong defense from Michael Bear and Donnie Smith and steady goalkeeping by Charlie Patterson. Roanoke defender Stephen Platt earned a sportsmanship award for his efforts.
Roanoke will represent the state June 28-30 in Niagara Falls, N.Y., at the U.S. Youth Soccer Association regional tournament.

David Brogan of Lexington fired a final-round 72 to capture his first Kenridge Invitational title at Farmington Country Club in Charlottesville.
Brogan, a nine-time champion at Lexington Country Club, finished with a 54-hole total of even-par 210 to outdistance runner-up Scott Inman of Springfield by three shots.
Richmond's David Partridge, who was gunning for a record sixth Kenridge title, tied for third at 217 with Fieldale's Keith Decker.
Scott Hunter paced the Roanoke contingent, finishing at 220. Jack Allison and Mike Smith finished at 224, while Ned Baber Roanoker Dan Keffer had a closing 72 to finish at 232. Keffer's final round was highlighted by a hole in one at the 233-yard 10th hole. Keffer's ace, courtesy of a 2-iron, was the tournament's first hole in one in five years.
Olin Browne shot a 5-under-par 67 in Richmond with birdies on three of the final four holes to win the $200,000 Nike-Dominion Open golf tournament by one stroke.
Browne, who started the final round four shots behind the leaders, matched his opening-round performance to capture the $36,000 first prize with a 12-under 276 total.
Four players - Carl Paulson, Rob McKelvey, Michael Christie and Tray Tyner - tied for second, a stroke behind Browne.
Defending champion Hugh Royer III and Brent Geiberger finished at 278.
Michael Stearns finished second overall in the JMU stage race held Saturday and Sunday in Orange and Stanardsville.
Stearns, who races for Team Smiley, won the 37-mile road race, took fourth in the three-mile uphill time trial and completed the 30-minute criterium in fifth place.
Ben Nielsen of the Blue Ridge Bike Club won the 17-18 category of the Junior State Road Race Championship in Orange. His brother, Owen Nielsen, finished second in the 11-12 category.
