Timothy Nelson, a 10th-grader at Christiansburg High School, attended a four-day Youth Leadership Conference at Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge, Pa. Nelson was sponsored at the conference by the Roanoke chapter of the Military Order of the World Wars.
Nelson is active in various organizations at school, including the Thespian Society, choral ensemble and chorale, the marching band, symphonic band and the academic competition teams. Outside of school, he plays the French horn in the Roanoke Youth Symphony, teaches piano and studies piano performance, music theory and organ study music competition in an after-school mentorship program.
He is the son of Charles and Norma Nelson of Christiansburg.
A Blacksburg High School student's artwork recently represented Virginia at the National PTA Reflections contest in Chicago. Ashley Harpole advanced to the national competition after winning first place at school, county and state levels in the Senior High Visual Arts division. The competition's theme was "Just Open Your Eyes and See."
Harpole's painting is titled "Both Sides of Me." She glued together different shades and colors of blue paper to design the self-portrait. A junior, she is the daughter of Andrea Salas of Houston and Doug Harpole of Blacksburg.
Twenty-four students recently were inducted into the National Honor Society at Radford High School. To be eligible, students must have a 3.5 or better grade point average on a 4.0 scale. Students also must meet high standards of leadership, service and character.

The following students have been selected as Seniors of the Month for May.
Kimberly A. Luz of Auburn High School is a member of the College Club, Students Against Drunk Driving and Spanish Club. She is a member of the softball team and team captain. She also is a member of her church's mime group, a preschool volunteer and has been playing the piano for five years. She is a recipient of a Virginia Tech Alumni Scholarship. She is the daughter of Dennis and Sharon Luz of Christiansburg.
Blacksburg High School student Stefan Williams is active in several music organizations. He is a member of the marching band (section leader), jazz band, Lationo band, International Thespian Society, music club and Theatre Arts Association. In addition, Williams is a member of the National Forensics League and president of the National Honor Society. He attended the 1995 Virginia Governor's School for the Visual and Performing Arts and the Roanoke College Science Olympics.
Williams has received a scholarship from Pennsylvania State University, which he will attend next fall. He is the son of Jerry and Juliann Williams of Blacksburg.
Jessica A. Hindle is an officer and an active member of several organizations, including treasurer of the Health Occupations Students of America, vice president of National Honor Society and co-captain of the Mountain Academic Competition Conference English Team. Hindle also was co-captain of the basketball team and a member of the Girls Athletic Association. She is a recipient a Christiansburg-Blacksburg Rotary Club Junior Achievement Award.
Hindle coaches girls' basketball for the Department of Parks and Recreation, volunteers with the Red Cross Bloodmobile, teaches vacation Bible school and serves on the church youth activity committee. She is the daughter of George and Barbara Hindle of Christiansburg.
Crystal D. Handy of Shawsville High School is a recipient of several awards and recognitions, including member of Who's Who Among American High School Students, Honor Roll Award (four years), Academic Letter and Academic Bar. Handy is a member of the Beta Club, president of the Spanish Club and captain of the Science MACC team.
Her involvement with the community includes Company of Women (Virginia Tech), International Order of Job's Daughters, volunteered for Roanoke's Festival in the Park and has taught Bible school for three years at Woodlawn United Methodist Church. She is the daughter of John and Carol Handy of Shawsville.
Three students from Elliston-Lafayette Elementary School recently have had news articles published in The Elementary School Writer, a national student newspaper. Samantha Hamlin, a fifth-grader, Starleena Moor, a fourth-grader, and Samantha Avila, a second-grader, are reporters for their school newspaper, The Elliston Express.
Hamlin's article was published in the March issue and was titled "Kids in the Kitchen," and was based on interviews with other kids about cooking and recipes. Moor and Avila both had poems published in the May issue of the newspaper. Moor's poem was titled "Spring." Avila's poem was titled "What I Like Best," and it was about drawing.
The students will receive certificates for their accomplishment. The Elementary School Writer receives more than 30,000 entries each year and accepts only about 3,000.
