A Senior Short Short Story contest, sponsored by New River Community College resulted in eight winners (listed alphabetically by author's last name): Nelson Boan for "It Wern't My Fault," Vivian L. Brezaele for "Quilt of Many Colors," Roland Canada for "The Drifters," Ola Pearl MaHone for "A Memorial," Sally Mook for "Chain of Events," Virginia Nabors for "Scratch," T. Lee Richards for "Truman - Did Character Make the Difference?," and Nancy Jean Thornton for "The Dog Nobody Wanted."
This year the writing was especially colorful.
In Mook's "Chain of Events," three aging sisters take an inconvenient road trip to a cousin's funeral. Their car breaks down and the nearest hotel has no vacancy: It has been filled up with guests for a wedding reception. Road weary, they take a lunch break and attempt to figure out what to do about their situation. Their problem is solved when Irene performs the Heimlich maneuver on one of the guests and as a reward, the bride's grandfather commandeers the wedding limo and the bride and groom to give the sisters a ride to the funeral.
