DEANE TAKES LEAVE FROM UVA SQUAD

Harold Deane, the leading scorer for the Virginia men's basketball team last season, will not join the Cavaliers for a trip to Europe this summer.

``It's important for Harold to take some time to examine his priorities, focus on his academic work and concentrate on some personal issues without any basketball responsibilities,'' coach Jeff Jones said in a statement released Tuesday by the school.

The news release said Deane took the leave of absence after consulting with his parents and Jones, who was out of town Tuesday.

Jones told the media in a meeting April 16 that he eventually would have a statement on Deane, who was arrested April 13 outside a private party. Deane, charged with trespassing and resisting arrest, was to have gone to court Monday, but the case was continued for a second time.

A source close to the team indicated there have been no new incidents.

``Dean of Students Bob Canevario will assess Harold's efforts to help us determine when and if he will rejoin the team,'' Jones said. ``If Harold deals with these issues in a satisfactory manner, he will rejoin the team.''
