EX-GLENVAR STAR MAKES HONOR SQUAD

Glenvar High School alumna Nikki Hall, a basketball player at Longwood College, headlined the Virginia Sports Information Directors Academic All-State first team.

Hall, a junior, earned a 3.75 grade-point average while double-majoring in anthropology and biology.

Second-teamers included Cave Spring graduate Tiki Barber, a running back at Virginia, Radford women's basketball player Dede Logemann, and W&L swimmer Nathan Hottle.

* Virginia Tech announced the signing of five high school wrestlers, including three who garnered All-America status. Michael Mercado of Virginia Beach, Eric Thompson of Hampton and Eric Hall of Glen Gardner, N.J., all were named to Prep Wrestling's Coast-to-Coast All-American team. The other signees were Ben Fisher of Dumfries and Ward Hugh of Manassas. The quintet posted a combined record of 618-87 in high school. Mercado, Thompson, Fisher and Hugh all won at least one Virginia high school state title.

* Junior first baseman Nate Shepperson of VMI was named to the third team of the GTE Academic All-American team. Shepperson, who led the Keydets in home runs (14) and hitting (.361) and finished the season with a school-record 22-game hitting streak, carried a 3.47 grade-point average in the classroom.
