Stacie Haynes of Blacksburg was recently inducted into the Radford University chapter of Alpha Lambda Delta, a national honor society for college freshmen based on academic achievements. Haynes is majoring in elementary education with a minor in Appalachian Studies.
During the past year, through an anthropology class, Haynes and several classmates have worked with the Coal Mining Heritage Association to compile a book of interviews that documents the lives of coal mining families in Montgomery County. The book is expected to be published in the fall.
Haynes is married to Luke Haynes and is the daughter of Steve and Sharon Spradlin, all of Blacksburg.
Several local students have been recognized as All-American Collegiate Scholars by the United States Achievement Academy. The Award Program recognizes students who excel academically; to be considered, students must earn a 3.3, or higher, grade point average. Students also must be selected and nominated by a school official or other qualified sponsor. Area students include:
Stacy M. Bielski of Bridgewater College. She is the daughter of Marilyn Bielski of Christiansburg.
Erin E. Bower of Radford University. Bower is majoring in biology. She recently was initiated into Radford's Virginia Epsilon Chapter of Pi Gamma Mu, the international honor society in social sciences. She is the daughter of David Bower, granddaughter of Frances Bower of Christiansburg and the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. M. Franklin Agee of Radford.
Tamasha Crouse of Radford University. She is the daughter of Eleanor Course and the granddaughter of Estelle Crouse, both of Pulaski.
Craig L. Turman of Bridgewater College. He is the son of Charles and Victoria Turman and the grandson of Elma Turman of Floyd.
Two area students received degrees from Campbell University in Buies Creek, N.C., at the university's spring commencement. James D. Page of Christiansburg received a bachelor's and master's degree in business administration. Rebecca R. Rader of Pearisburg received a bachelor of science.
Kimberly D. Mattox of Christiansburg graduated with a bachelor of science degree from Lees-McRae College. She is the daughter of James and Nancy Mattox of Christiansburg.
Five students from Christiansburg graduated from Emory & Henry College at the May 18 commencement. The students are:
Kathleen V. Brann received a degree in physical education and plans to teach. On-campus, she was active with Sigma Upsilon Nu social sorority and the Student Virginia Education Association. She was an athletic trainer and played four years of varsity basketball. In her senior year, she earned All-Conference honorable mention recognition. She is the daughter of Esther and Daniel Brann.
J. Meggan Crowgey majored in interdisciplinary English. She was a member of both the football and basketball cheerleading squads. She is the daughter of Judy and Rodney Crowgey.
Suzanne P. Shelburne majored in history. She will pursue graduate study at Appalachian State University. On-campus, she was active with in Delta Rho Delta social sorority. She is the daughter of Janet and Richard Shelburne.
Melissa M. Sumner received a degree in music with a minor in art. She has sung with the concert choir and was often a featured soloist. On-campus, she was involved with Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity and Kappa Phi Alpha social sorority. She is the daughter of Daniel Sumner.
Kevin D. Alexander received a degree in management. This spring, he interned at the United Company in Bristol. A four-year member of the men's basketball team, he holds the school's record in career assists. He finished his career as the 15th all-time career assists leader in NCAA Division III history. He is the son of Charlotte and Ronnie Alexander.
Valerie Kanney of Christiansburg was inducted into the Alpha of Virginia chapter of Phi Beta Kappa at the College of William and Mary. A senior majoring in art history, Kanney is a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma, Phi Eta Sigma, Alpha Lambda Delta, Golden Key and Canterbury Club. She is the daughter of Doug and Penny Kanney of Christiansburg.
Several area students are among the 12 New River Valley Community College graduates to be named "Outstanding Students in a Curriculum." The students were recognized at a recent awards ceremony at the college. The students are:
Sheri R. Jennings of Pembroke for general studies; Reba M. Smart of Christiansburg for accounting; Walter J. Wierwille of Blacksburg for computer information systems; Gina E. Linkenhoker of Blacksburg for fashion merchandising; Suzanne D. Jessee of Radford for human services; Monica M. Wilson of Radford for marketing; Melissa L. Ball of Pembroke for office systems technology; and posthumously to Michael K. Rileyof Narrows for business management.
