Chautauqua Festival

WYTHEVILLE - The 12th annual Chautauqua Festival will be held from June 15 through June 23 at the Elizabeth Brown Memorial Park in downtown Wytheville.

Entertainers will include Sammy Kershaw, Dr. Hook, featuring Ray Sawyer, and the Band of Oz. "The Wizard of Oz" will be presented by Philadelphia's American Family Theater.

Entries for some exhibits are still being accepted.

July 4th parade

BLACKSBURG - Entries for the 10th annual Blacksburg Independence Day parade are needed. The parade, organized by the Mount Tabor Ruritan Club, will begin at 2 p.m. on July 4, at the south side of Blacksburg Middle School. The parade will march along Main Street to the Virginia Tech Drill Field. The theme is "Renewing Democracy: You and Me, Step by Step."

Trophies for the best theme representation, best youth unit and best overall unit will be awarded.

Entries can be as big as a bus but can also be antique cars, racecars, three- and four-wheelers, lawn tractors, bicycles, tricycles and wagons. The parade needs walking and marching units, and especially, musical entries. A section in the parade will be reserved for children to participate with their cycles, wagons and costumes.

There is no entry fee, but participants should register by June 27.

GED graduation

DUBLIN - The Regional Center for Adult Education at New River Community College will host the fifth annual graduation ceremony for persons who have earned their General Education Development (GED) certificate on June 22, at 6 p.m., in Edwards Hall.

If you have earned a GED certificate and you would like to participate in the ceremony, call Marfesa Clark or Sharon Harvey at ext. 452 or 652 at 674-3600, 745-4595, 921-4595 or 382-4595.

Adults who have earned their GED during the 95-96 academic year who are from the counties of Pulaski, Floyd, Giles and the City of Radford are eligible to participate in the ceremony.

SHARE volunteers

CHRISTIANSBURG - SHARE Virginia is a non-profit program of New River Community Action, etablished to encourage and reward volunteers, and to stretch household food dollars. Everyone who volunteers two or more hours each month with a school, church, a neighbor or anywhere in the community is eligible to participate in SHARE.

There are no dues, no forms, and no income restrictions. Each month participants can purchase a high quality, nutritious food package at about half of the retail cost. Registration and food pick-up is set up in neighborhoods through volunteer-operated and sponsored host sites.

Cheerleader camp

RADFORD - A summer camp for junior and senior high school cheerleaders, sponsored by the Eastern Cheerleaders Association (ECA), will be held at Radford University July 26-29.

Cheerleading squads will learn new cheers, chants, sidelines, dances, jumps, band dances, and partner stunts. They will also participate in workshops and squad discussion sessions.

Crowd motivation and involvement will be the focus of the camp.

Adult Degree Program

RADFORD - Radford University Adult Degree Program information sessions will be held on Wednesday, June 5, at 1 p.m. in Lounge C of Heth Student Center and at 6:30 p.m. in Young 209.

Admission to the program requires applicants to attend an information session. Representatives will answer questions, provide financial aid information and review transcripts.

The program offers special considerations for adults seeking to complete their college degree including liberal transfer credit, credit by examination, portfolio assessment of demonstrated learning and correspondence study.

GED classes

DUBLIN - Free classes for people who are preparing for the General Education Development (GED) test are available at New River Community College on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. through June 27, in Godbey 133.

Writer's retreat

RADFORD - Selu Writer's Retreat V will be held at Radford University from June 16-29. Participants can register for one or two weeks.

The retreat provides a quiet, unstructured environment for writing and discussing work.

Selu V coincides with the 19th annual Highland Summer Conference, which includes public evening programs by writers Bill Brown, Donald Secreast and Elizabeth McCommon as well as sever writers who are founding members of the retreat.

A private, air-conditioned residence hall room with private bath is $252 for one week and $441 for two weeks. Double occupancy can be arranged. Meals are $14 per person per day. Kitchen facilities are available; bath and bed linens are supplied.

Summer reading

RADFORD - The Radford Public Library will begin the annual Summer Reading Program on Monday with Sign Up Week for children age three through rising seventh graders.

This year's theme for the program is "Chose Your Own Adventure." Each child who signs up for the program will receive a reading log, bookmark and book bag. When the program ends on Aug. 3, young children who read at least ten books and older children who read at least five longer books will be awarded books and certificates.

Sherry Vaughn, storyteller, will be at the library on Saturday, June 15, at 1:30 p.m., to kick off the Summer Reading Program with world tales and adventures.

4-H horse show

ABINGDON - The annual Southwest Virginia All Youth 4-H Horse Show will be June 22. The event will be at the Southwest Virginia 4-H Educational Center in Abingdon. It is the official Southwest District 4-H Horse show to qualify 4-H'ers for the Virginia State 4-H Horse Show.

The event includes classes and events for the varied horse interests in the overall Mountain Empire area. To enter, participants must be at least 9 years old by Sept. 30 and no more more than 19 years old as of Dec. 31. Children under 9 can show in the stick horse class. Exhibitors do not have to belong to 4-H to participate. Lodging, camping and recreational facilities will be open to all participants and their families for a fee.

The show will be on a post entry basis and all fees for entry, lodging, stabling, etc., are on an economical basis available to all youth and families. A current negative Coggins test must be presented on each animal. The event is open to the public.
