Burlington to shut down 2 textile plants
GREENSBORO, N.C. - Textile producer Burlington Industries Inc. said Wednesday it will close two plants and cut 1,100 jobs as it works to eliminate its money-losing knitted fabrics division.
The two plants are located in Denton and Wake Forest, N.C., and will close by the end of summer. Burlington tried two years ago to retool the division, which produces cotton and cotton-blend fabric for golf shirts, turtlenecks and other items.
Burlington operates a carpet plant at Glasgow and the Bacova Guild Ltd., a maker and marketer of home decor items with operations in Bath and Alleghany counties,
``We changed management, consolidated operations and revitalized our product lines, but the division as a whole still has not returned to profitability,'' said chief executive George Henderson.
