Washington and Lee baseball player Graig Fantuzzi has been named to the GTE Academic All-America College Division team for the third consecutive year. It was Fantuzzi's second consecutive year on the first team; he was a second-team selection as a sophomore.
The senior left fielder batted .378 with 28 RBI and 17 steals to lead the Generals to a 16-13 record, their best since 1935. Fantuzzi graduated with a 4.2 grade-point average, the second highest in the history of the school (an A+ at W&L is worth 4.3 on a 4.0 scale). A business and engineering major, Fantuzzi will study in Singapore next year as a Fulbright scholar.

A host of new Late Model Stock drivers, including Roanoke native and former track champion Tim McGuire, Hillsville's Jimmy Phillips and Rocky Mount's Kenny Wagner will be racing Saturday night in the Kristin Ann Maaco 300 at Franklin County Speedway.
Limited Sportsman, Pure Stock, Mini Stock and Any Car divisions also will be racing at the Callaway track. The first green flag falls at 7 p.m. Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for students, with children 10 and under admitted free.
Winston Cup driver Mike Wallace will not be on hand Saturday night to sign autographs at New River Valley Speedway. Instead Junie Donlavey, the owner of the No.90 Heilig Meyers Winston Cup car will be there.
There will be a 100-lap or one-hour Enduro race on tap for Saturday's events. If any Enduro driver hasn't sent the $25 registration fee, he or she can pay the day of the race.
There will be a 100-lap Late Model Stock race, along with a 35-lap Limited Sportsman race, a 25-lap Pure Stock race and a 25-lap Mini Stock race in the Hoechst Celanese 300 on Saturday. Gates open at 1:30, practice begins at 3:30 and the green flag drops at 8 p.m.

The time of Glenvar's Group A semifinal softball game today against Honaker has been changed to 7 p.m. at Green Hill Park.
The Highlanders, in a bid to make Saturday's championship game at the Powhatan-Sussex Central winner, will start pitcher Amy Layman, who threw a no-hitter to beat St.Paul 7-2 in a first-round game. Honaker will challenge with a lineup that has eight of nine hitters batting .326 to .426.
