Powell Valley has become a huge nemesis for the Giles Spartans.
After ending Giles' football season in a Group A Division 2 semifinals, the Vikings once again tamed the Spartans, this time in baseball.
Powell Valley shut out Giles 3-0 in a Group A semifinal Thursday.
Wes Hall and Todd Zirkle combined on a four-hitter to lead the Vikings (20-4-1) to the state championship game against the winner of the Stuarts Draft-Northampton semifinal.
Hall (8-1) got the victory, pitching 51/3 innings and giving up all four hits while walking four and striking out eight. Zirkle pitched 11/3 perfect innings of relief to earn the save.
Powell Valley scored two runs in the fourth inning and that was all it would need. Zirkle led off the inning with a walk off Giles starter Neal Mustard and scored on a single by Clay Prewitt.
The other run in the inning came home on an error, as did the Powell Valley run in the sixth.
Mustard (7-1) was the tough-luck loser, going the distance and giving up three runs on five hits. He struck out five and walked two.
Two of Powell Valley's runs were unearned because Giles' committed two errors.
The Spartans, who left eight men on base, finished the season with a 22-2 record. Their only other loss was to Floyd County.
Powell Valley used its football victory over the Spartans as the impetus to a state title. Now the Vikings hope to do the same in baseball.
