BALL, John Thomas Jr., 55, of Botetourt, went home to be with Jesus, Wednesday, June 5, 1996. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Pearl Ball Sr., and was employed by Boone Company Realtors. Surviving are his loving wi fe, Nell T. Ball; son and daughter-in-law, Tony and Tammy Ball, Lakeworth, Fla.; stepdaughter and son-in-law, Holly and Allan Ham, Roanoke; stepson, Drew Taliaferro, Salem; three grandchildren, Alice, Stone and Tyler; one sister and brother-in-law, Judie and Chester Jones, Blue Ridge; three nieces and many more family and special friends who always enjoyed his good sense of humor and enthusiasm for a good joke. BARNES, Eli W., 68, of Roanoke County, went to be with our Lord on Wednesday, June 5, 1996. He was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict, a retired employee of The Roanoke Times, and a member of Poages Mill Church of the Brethren. COLEMAN, Harold Edward, 67, Buena Vista, died We dnesday, June 5, 1996, at his home. He was born in Rockbridge County January 8, 1929. A son of Lillian Wimmer Coleman and the late Roy Loving Coleman Sr., he was retired from Lees Carpets. Mr. Coleman was preceded in death by two sisters, Vivian Coleman Shafer and Pauline Coleman Cartolaro, and a brother, James O. Coleman. Surviving in addition to his mother are three sons, Travis Martin, Harold Coleman Jr. and Troy Coleman, all of Buena Vista; a daughter-in-law, Sharon Martin; two grandsons, Joshua Martin and Tyler Martin, all of Buena Vista; one sister, Faye Coleman Burch of Buena Vista; three brothers, Roy L. Coleman Jr., Curtis Coleman and Jerry Coleman, all of Buean Vista; an aunt, Pauline Wimmer Jomes of Buena Vista; and a number of nieces and nephews. COLLINS, Annie Gertrude, 80, of Pembroke, died Thursday morning, June 6, 1996, at Giles Memorial Hospital in Pearisburg. Born in Giles County on November 7, 1915, she was a daughter of the late Brackett an d Mae Smith Myers. Gertrude was retired from VPI&SU, was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, New River Ward, and was the wife of the late James Ray (``Shockey"") Collins. Surviving are one son, Ray McKinley Collins of Pembroke; six daughters, Shirley Hutson, Reba Dudding, Kathleen Utt, Jacqueline Collins and Glenna DeRico of Pembroke and Wanda Price of Pearisburg; one sister, Mary Helen Lafon of Pearisburg; 13 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren. CREGGER, William Claude, 80, of Route 4, Wytheville, died Thursday, June 6, 1996, in the Wythe County Community Hospital. He was the son of the late Hattie Dix and Kyle D. Cregger, and was a U.S.. Army veteran of World Wa r II. He is survived by his wife, Beulah U. Cregger of Wytheville; daughters and son-in-law, Jane C. and Tommy Cornett of Wytheville, Joan C. Catron of Roanoke; sisters, Ruby Bowles, Louise Walters, both of Wytheville; brother, Raymond ``Jake'' Cregger of Wytheville; grandchildren and spouse, Vanessa and Fred C. DEARING, Audrey Elizabeth Lynch, of Vinton, born in Williamsburg, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, June 5, 1996 at her residence. She was the widow of Maynard Layman Dearing. Mrs. Dearing was retired from the city clerks office in Roanoke. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, S. Dale and Laura Lynne Dearing, Vinton; two grandchildren, Cr ystal Leigh Dearing, and Mark Allen Dearing; two stepgrandchildren, Jason Chad Helms, and Jayme P.H. Helms; one brother, David M. HARRISON, Altha Edna, 85, of Albany, Ore., died Tuesday, June 4, 1996. She was born and lived in or near Albany her entire life. She graduated from Albany High School in 1928 and Northwest Business College in Portland, Ore., in 1930. She was active in many civic affairs her entire life, having prepared and presented two papers as recently as last month. She was a committed Christian who actively participated in church life at the United Presbyterian Church of Albany. She was a church school teacher, Superintendent of the Junior Department, President of Presbyterian Women, Deacon, Elder, Clerk of Session, and more recently a pastoral counseling associate. She was a source of wisdom, strength and self-sacrificing love to all who knew her. She rejoiced at being able to attend her granddaughter Lisa's graduation from the University of Virginia two weeks ago. She is survived by Russell B. Harrison, her husband of nearly 60 years; two sons, Glenn R. Harrison of Albany, Ore., and David G. Harrison of Roanoke, Va.; grandchildren, Nancy Harrison of Portland, Ore., Sherry Harrison of Forest Grove, Ore., and Lisa and Scott Harrison of Roanoke, Va., and by many good friends. MOORE, Fay Neese, 76, of Lexington, died Thursday, June 6, 1996 at her home. Mrs. Moore was born December 11, 1919 in Greensboro, N.C., a daughter of the late James Harvey Neese and Minnie Virginia Kimbro Neese. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Erlu and Victor Neese. As a young girl, Fay had a radio program of Popular music and also sang in church choirs in the Greensboro area, an activity she continued over the years in Cleveland, Alexandria and Miami. She always had ``a song in her heart"". She attended Guilford College and was a graduate of Florida State University. After retirement from the Fort Worth Texas Public Library and moving to Virginia she was a volunteer at the Rockbridge Library. Surviving are her husband, Paul L. Moore, Lexington; a daughter and son-in-law, Connie and Jack Bissett, Lexington; a son and daughter-in-law, Bryan and Leslie Moore, Olney, Md.; a brother, Bradford Neese, Shalimar, Fla.; five grandchildren, Thad, Mason and Spencer Bissett, Jonathan and Diana Fay Moore. Funeral services will be conducted 2:30 p. m. Sunday, June 9, 1996 at the Harrison Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. John Furgerson officiating. Burial will follow in the Stonewall Jackson Cemetery. PITNER, RAdm. Robert Nelms, USNR Ret., 75, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, June 5, 1996, at the Virginia Veterans Care Center, Salem, after a lengthy was the son of the late Hugh Marcus Pitner and Leila Nelms Pitner. He was a resident of Fairfax, from 1960 to 1989 and of Winchester, from 1989 to 1992. A 1942 graduate of Mississippi State College, he was commissioned an ensign and naval aviator in 1943, serving as a flight instructor at Barin Field and later serving in the Pacific Fleet, and was one of five brothers to serve in the Navy in World War II and the Korean War. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and four Air Medals for action over Korea while flying from the carrier, USS Boxer. A Navy Reserve Officer for nearly 34 years, he was commanding officer of fighter squadron VF-791, Millington, Tenn., when it won the Noel Davis Trophy in 1959, was chief of staff of AWS-66, NARTU, Washington, D.C. and commanding officer of NARS-66, Washington, D.C. He retired in 1976 with the rank of Rear Admiral. An active member of the Naval Reserve Association, he served as president of the Wardroom Chapter, Washington, D.C., and served two years as national 1st vice president. He served on the Naval Reserve Policy Board; was director, Management Information Center, NARTU, Washington, and was a director of the Blue Water Education Institute. In civilian life, he was East Coast sales representative of Hydro-Air Division of Crane Co.; was part owner and general manager of Flight Line Services Co.; chief staff officer for the Democratic Research Organization, U.S. House of Representatives; and a consultant for aerospace companies. Other activities included: Chairman, New Albany, Miss., School Board; President, Mississippi State U. Alumni Assn., D.C. Chapter; Senior Warden, Church of the Ascension, Anglican-Catholic Church, Centerville, Va.; President, Huguenot Society of Washington, D.C.; Board Member of the D.C. Council of the Navy League; Worshipful Master of Alexandria-Washington Masonic Lodge 22; Member of the Royal Arch, Knights Templar, Shriners, Sojourners, Sons of Confederate Veterans and Sons of the Revolution in the District of Columbia. He is survived by his wife, Hamer Cole Pitner; son, Robert Paul Pitner and his wife, Jeanne Kirkpatrick Pitner of Roanoke, son, Sperry Hunt Pitner and his wife, Jeannie Shaver Pitner of Little River, S.C.; two grandchildren, John Courtney Pitner and Claire Bouton Pitner; three stepgrandsons, Warren, Tom and Michael Shaver; two brothers, Dan Nelms Pitner, Tupelo, Miss., and Sam Nelms Pitner, Carrollton, Miss. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Paul Nelms Pitner and Edward Nelms Pitner, both of New Albany, Miss. Services and burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery in the Ol d Myer Chapel at 11 a.m. Friday, June 21, 1996, with Father David Rupp presiding. SOWERS, W. Brian, 17, of Southeast Roanoke, passed away Thursday, June 6, 1996. He was named Virginia's VFW Volunteer of the Year for 1994, and Vinton Ladies Auxiliary VFW Post #4522 Volunteer of the Year for 1992. He was a volunteer at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Salem, where he earned a 500-hour pin for his work in helping patients with physical therapy. Brian was a junior at Patrick Henry High School and a member of the Vinton Police Cadet program. He also was a member of Waverly Place Baptist Church, where he helped teach Sunday school and participated in youth activities and athletics. Surviving are his mother and father, Vanessa and Bill; his brother, Christopher; his sister, Stacy; his grandparents, Dean Sowers of Danville, and Jack and Barbara (``Paw Paw and Granny"") Lipscomb of Vinton, and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
