FEDERAL AGENCY SEARCHES BLACKSBURG FIRM

Special agents from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency have seized computer files and other materials from the offices of a Blacksburg consultant and software developer for the groundwater and air-modeling industries.

The raid at the offices of Environmental Systems & Technologies took place Thursday. Neither federal authorities nor John C. Parker, ES&T president, would comment about it Friday. But the office on Sheffield Drive, near Hethwood, was open.

Various federal authorities said Friday that they could not comment on the raid or the reasons behind it, and a spokesperson for Parker at the ES&T office said "no comment" was the only response there. Parker would not talk with a reporter at the office.

Among the items seized were computer diskettes, monitors, manuals, software and keyboards; work and time sheets; technical support, shipping and postal logs; data tapes, compact discs, billing reports, appointment books, workshop invoices and correspondence.

Agents also made a search of Parker's home on Murphy Street, taking mostly computer hardware and software.

Search warrants for both places listed items to be seized relating to contracts and subcontracts that ES&T or Parker had with private clients from Jan. 1, 1992, until now. The warrants excluded any opening of electronic mail.
