EXAMINER: DEATHS WERE CAUSED BY BLUNT INSTRUMENT

A medical examiner confirmed Friday that a Southwest Roanoke couple found dead in their apartment were beaten to death with a blunt instrument.

Police have released few details about their investigation into the double homicide, which increased the number of slayings in the city this year to four. They did say they have what they believe to be the weapon used to kill the couple. But they would not elaborate.

Wanda and Manfred Woody were found face down on the kitchen floor of their apartment early Thursday by their 17-year-old son, police said. Each suffered multiple blows to the head, according to Dr. William Massello, assistant deputy chief medical examiner.

No other marks were found on the bodies. Massello said he had not determined an approximate time of death.

Police responded to 845 Day Ave. S.W. shortly after Malcolm Woody, 17, called them about 8 a.m. Thursday. Police said Malcolm Woody told them he was asleep in the three-room apartment and awoke sometime after 5 a.m. to find his parents dead.

Wanda Woody, 42, was found near the kitchen table. Manfred Woody, 59, was found near the refrigerator.

Police said they do not believe that either robbery or burglary was involved.
