A combined marijuana and moonshine operation in Craig County was raided Friday evening, and two people were arrested.
Acting on a tip, Craig County Sheriff's, Virginia State Police, U.S. Forest Service and Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries officers responded with a search warrant to a residence 21/2 miles off Virginia 311 on Virginia 621 about 10:30 p.m., said Trooper J.M. King of the state police.
"Officers confiscated 18 marijuana plants, two pounds of processed marijuana, one moonshine still, six gallons of moonshine, three 55-gallon drums of mash in the fermenting process and various other drug paraphernalia," King said.
Gary Coleman Elmore, 39, and Janet Lee Scott, 26, both of New Castle, were arrested and charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of a still apparatus without a permit and possession of untaxed alcohol, King said.
Elmore and Scott were taken to the Craig County Sheriff's Office for processing and released on unsecured bond.
"The marijuana was being grown indoors at Elmore's residence with grow lights set on timers in a room underneath the carport, like a canning cellar," King said. The still also was found inside.
"There were no problems, and everything went smoothly without incident," King said. "There shouldn't be any more arrests."
