The Roanoke RiverDawgs dropped a 3-1 decision to the Central Jersey Riptide in a U.S. Interregional Soccer League game Saturday night in East Brunswick, N.J.
Roanoke (2-2) had three goals taken off the board because of offsides calls. The first two were in the first half and would have given the RiverDawgs a 3-1 lead, but instead the teams went to the locker room tied at 1. Waughn Hughes scored in the eighth minute on an assist from Jeff Knittel to give Roanoke the lead. Central Jersey knotted the score on a goal by Jeff Williams in the 24th minute.
The Riptide scored in the 59th minute on a controversial goal when no offsides call was made. Knittel scored later for Roanoke, but it too was called back for offsides. The Riptide ended any hopes Roanoke had of tying the score with a goal in the 87th minute.
Aaron Ewert had 12 saves to keep the RiverDawgs in the game. Roanoke returns home to meet the Richmond Kickers at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

University of Virginia lacrosse standout Doug Knight picked up the Lt.Ray Enners Award on Saturday as the most outstanding player in Division I.
Knight, a junior, led the Cavaliers in scoring with 56 goals and 30 assists for 86 points. His points and goals totals were UVa records, and the goal tally also was an ACC record.
UVa teammate Michael Watson received the Jack Turnbull Award as the top attackman in Division I. Watson scored 49 goals and added 26 assists for the year.

Brandon LaCroix of Roanoke finished seventh in the 16- and 17-year-old division after the first round of the Brick Landing Invitational golf tournament in Ocean Isle, N.C.
LaCroix shot a 3-over-par 75 and was five strokes off the pace in the 120-player field. Another Roanoker, Andrew Gregory, shot an 82. The final round is today.
Robert Nussey Jr. and Bob Garrison each shot back to back 67s to combine for a 10-under 134 two-day total to win the 27th Four-Ball championship of the Virginia State Golf Association in Irvington.
Nussey and Garrison won the title by two strokes over collegians Larry Loving (Virginia Commonwealth) and Scott Campbell (East Carolina). Loving birdied No.18 to give them sole possession of second.
Chad Green hit for the cycle, going 4-for-5, scoring four runs and driving in four to give the USA baseball team a 16-6 victory over Nicaragua in Millington, Tenn.
Virginia ace Seth Greisinger picked up the victory by pitching four innings and striking out seven. He gave up three runs on six hits while walking one
Team USA pounded out 16 hits in extending its winning streak to 22 games.
Les Wynn of the Sprint PowerBar team finished fourth in the combined Category 2-3 Masters class of the Roan Groan Road Race in Roan Mountain, Tenn.
Tickets for the 1996 NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship will go on sale to the general public at 8:30 a.m. Monday at the Robins Center ticket office on the University of Richmond campus.
The championship will be Dec.13-15 at the University of Richmond Stadium. Ticket books are $35 and cover the semifinals Friday and the championship game Sunday.
Ticket holders for the 1996 event will be given first right of refusal for tickets for the 1997 championship, which also will be held at the University of Richmond. For information, call the Robins Center ticket office at (804) 289-8390.
