AVALANCHE FALLS IN 10 INNINGS

The recent spate of bad luck continues for the Salem Avalanche.

After battling back from a five-run deficit to tie the score in the ninth inning, Salem lost 6-5 in 10 innings Saturday night when Lincoln Martin singled home the winning run for the Frederick Keys before a crowd of 7,959 at Harry Grove Stadium.

The rally started when Jim Foster walked for the fourth time in the game to lead off the 10th off Salem reliever Todd Genke. Tom D'Aquila then tried to sacrifice, but Foster was forced at second for the first out.

D'Aquila stole second, went to third when Blake Barthol's throw rolled into center field and scored on Martin's infield single.

The Avalanche (32-30) could have scored in the top half of the inning, but Frederick center fielder Harry Berrios threw out Kyle Houser at the plate when Houser tried to score on Nate Holdren's shallow fly ball.

Salem had tied the score with two runs in the ninth. Barthol walked and Earl Cunningham singled off Frederick reliever Alvie Shepherd. Pookie Jones sacrificed the runners to second and third.

Steven Bernhardt flew out for the second out, but a clutch two-run single by Keith Grunewald tied the score at 5.

Frederick (30-33) had a chance to win in the bottom of the ninth after the loading the bases with one out against Salem closer Luis Colmenares. But Genke, who came on in relief of Colmenares, got David Dellucci to ground into a fielder's choice and Grunewald gunned down Denio Gabriel at the plate. Genke then got Mike Wolff to ground out to end the threat.

Mike Trimarco (4-2) pitched one inning of scoreless relief.
