RAIN BRINGS AUTO RACING TO A HALT

Chris Martin won the Mini Stock race and then the rains came as the Maaco 300 race at Franklin County Speedway was postponed Saturday night.

The race will be added to the end of the regular schedule and will be made up Oct.5. The Callaway track will honor rain checks Saturday night. A $1,000 Any Car race will be held Saturday night along with the regularly scheduled events, including a Late Model Stock race in which Jimmy Mullins and Dudley Lawhorne look to break their points deadlock. Both are tied at 276.

Martin won his first race of the season, beating Dennis Sloan, who finished second. Gary Joyce was third, followed by Bobby Hurt and Richard Doss.

The Hoechst Celanese 200 was postponed Saturday night because of bad weather at New River Valley Speedway. The Radford track will honor rain checks Saturday for the Shelor 100, when fans will have a chance to meet their favorite drivers as part of fan appreciation night.

Ed Dickinson of the Blue Ridge Cycling team finished second in the 50-mile category 2-3 division in the Catoctin Challenge Road Race in Wolfsville, Md.

Brandon LaCroix of Roanoke shot a final-round 75 to finish sixth in the Brick Landing Invitational golf tournament on the Brick Landing Golf Course in Ocean Isle, N.C.

LaCroix carded a 75 on Saturday to finish at 150, seven strokes off the winner's two-day total. The event, which featured 120 golfers, was a Rolex All-American points tournament.

Brentsville District won the Group A boys' soccer tournament at Radford on Saturday. Brentsville beat Radford 7-4 in the championship. In the semifinals, Radford defeated Central Woodstock 3-2 in overtime and Brentsville beat Northumberland 7-1.
