KEYS RIP AVALANCHE SALEM FALLS AGAIN, 9-5

It may be time for the Salem Avalanche to hit the panic button.

Frederick's Johnny Isom drove in five runs and Eric Chavez became the all-time home run leader in team history as the Keys rolled past Salem 9-5 on Sunday in a Carolina League game that was delayed an hour and 20 minutes because of rain.

The loss was the 11th in the past 13 games for the Avalanche, including three of four in this series and leaves it one game over .500 on the season. Salem (32-31) concludes the first half with a six-game homestand, starting tonight versus Kinston.

Chavez hit his seventh homer of the season - a solo blast - which gave him 30 for his career as a Key.

The Keys (31-33) jumped out to a 5-1 lead by scoring four runs with two outs in the fourth off Salem starter Matt Pool. Jim Foster smacked a solo homer and Isom, who was 3-for-5, had a three-run double to give the Keys a four-run lead.

Isom later added a solo homer and Lincoln Martin had three hits for the second consecutive game as the Keys pounded out 13 hits.

Five different Salem players - Keith Grunewald, John Giudice, Blake Barthol, Earl Cunningham and John Fantauzzi - had an RBI. Giudice hit a solo homer and scored three runs, and Barthol scored two runs to lead the Avalanche attack.

Jeff Sobkoviak (2-3) was the loser, giving up two runs on three hits in one inning. Robert Morseman (2-0) got the win, going the last 2 1/3 innings and giving up just two hits while walking one and striking out three.
