'CRAZY FOR YOU' AT MILL MOUNTAIN|

Mill Mountain Theatre opens the Gershwin musical ``Crazy for You'' June 21 with Roanoke native Elizabeth Dressler returning home for the lead role. She plays Polly, the only girl in Deadrock, Nev. Drew Geraci is Bobby Child, the boy who gets the girl. The cast also includes Dawn Westbrook, Curley Ennis and Doug Patterson.

The play is choreographed by Craig North, directed by Artistic and Executive Director Jere Lee Hodgin and Musical Director David Caldwell. Sets are designed by John Sailer and costumes by Mitch Baker. Guest lighting designer is John Wolf.

History museum|

The Roanoke Valley History Museum seeks members for its docent association. Members serve as museum hosts, guiding tours and providing behind-the scenes support. Previous experience is not required; training is provided. Call Rebecca Fitzgerald, 342-5724.

Tech forestry|

field day|

Virginia Tech's annual field day, a showcase of research projects dealing with forestry and wildlife, will be held June 27 at the Reynolds Homestead Forest Resources Research Center in Critz.

The 710-acre research center, managed by Tech's College of Forestry and Wildlife Resources, is a pilot forest for biologists and provides fisheries research at pond sites.

Field-day visitors will view the 24-year-old white- and yellow-pine stands to learn about management alternatives. Guests will also travel to Keesee Farm and Nursery.

Franklin County|

summer programs|

The Franklin County YMCA has announced several summer athletic programs.

Three activity learning camps will include programs from instructional basketball and soccer to children's theater and science classes. Activity camps will be held 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays June 24-29, July 22-26 and Aug. 19-23. Camps are open to children who have just completed grades K-5; cost is $55 for non-Y members.

The summer basketball league for adults and youths ages 14 and older is accepting registration for league play. Games will be Monday and Thursday nights from 6 to 10 at the National Guard Armory. Church teams, civic teams and business groups are encouraged to place a team in the league. Entry fee is $120 per team and $5 for each non-Y member. Games begin June 17.

Swimming classes for all ages and levels of ability will begin at two locations in the county June 17.

Registrations is being received for participation in the Franklin County Games, which will determine countywide championships in several sporting events. The games, which will be June 28-29, are part of the Rotary Independence Festival and will be held at Franklin County High School and Benjamin Franklin Middle School. The games will include badminton, three-on-three basketball, croquet, disc golf, horseshoes, roller hockey, softball home run derby, table tennis, outdoor volleyball and weightlifting. featured at Longwood|

Work by Roanoke artist William White is included in ``Painting the Interior Landscape: William White & Valerie Hardy,'' on view at the Longwood Center for the Visual Arts in Farmville.

The exhibit, through Sept. 21, showcases by White, who teaches at Hollins College, and Hardy, an adjunct faculty member at the College of William and Mary.

White is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Art and has an MFA from Temple University's Tyler School of Art. He has taught drawing, painting and contemporary art history at Hollins since 1971. He has co-produced several video documentaries of contemporary women artists for Blue Ridge Public Television.

Marine Corps|

League runs Aug. 24|

The Marine Corps League 10K and youth one-mile run will be held Aug. 24 at the Marine Corps Reserve Center (across from Skateland) on Graves Mill Road in Lynchburg. The 10K run begins at 8 a.m., and the mile run begins at 9:15 a.m.

The race is sponsored by the Marine Corps League and is directed by the Lynchburg Roadrunners. Pre-registration for the 10K is $10; race day registration is $12. Registration for the mile run is $8. Call (804) 385-8107 or (804) 525-9303.

Children's literature|

lectures at Hollins|

Hollins College invites the public to attend lectures, readings and a daylong conference offered in conjunction with the school's children's literature program.

Nancy Willard, winner of the Newbery Medal for ``A Visit to William Blake's Inn'' and author of numerous other works for children, will lecture July 1 at 8:15 p.m. in Babcock Auditorium, Dana Science Building.

``The Baker, The Bear and the Blacksmith,'' will be performed by the Theater at Lime Kiln at Hollins College July 8 at 10 a.m. in Babcock Auditorium.

The play is a folktale based on stories of Europe and Appalachia.

Students will read from their work July 10 at 12:30 p.m. in the Janney Lounge, Moody Center.

Elizabeth Poe, editor of SIGNAL Journal and associate professor of English at Radford University, will speak on ``Learning from Barbara Wersba,'' a young adult author, July 15 at 8:15 p.m. in Babcock Auditorium.

The second annual Hollins Conference on Children's literature will be July 20 in Babcock Auditorium. The event will include presentations of literary criticism and creative works. Call 362-6024.

Barter Theatre|

ABINGDON - Barter Theatre will offer two theater workshops for young people this summer.

Theater games and improvisation for ages 6-11 will be held 9 a.m.-noon June 24-28. It introduces students to basic acting skills through creative drama games.

Acting and Improvisation for ages 12-18 uses drama exercises to show students how their lives have already prepared them in many ways to act. This class, 9 a.m.-noon, is June 29-Aug. 2.

Both workshops will be held at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Abingdon. Registration information is available by calling 628-2281, extension 327.
