She was a devoted member and Sunday school teacher at Central United Methodist Church in Salem for many years. She is survived by her husband, Clarence M. Coffman; one son, Steven M. FLORA, Miriam Ferrell, 82, of Roanoke went home to be with the Lord, Sunday, June 9, 1996. She was the widow of C. Cecil Flora. Mrs. Flora taught school at William Fleming High School and The Eaton School. She was a founding member of Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church and the Monday Morning Prayer Group. She was a board member of Damascus Ministries and was active in Precept Ministries Bible Study as well as a strong advocate of prayer which she continued until her death. She was also a friend of the West End Center for Youth, The Presbyterian Community Center and Campus crusade for Christ. Surviving are a sister, Elizabeth Harris; a cousin, Margaret Ferrell; four children, Charles C. Flora, Jr., Blair Wood, Beth Smith and Ellen Genovese, all of Roanoke; eleven grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. There will be a memorial service on Saturday, June 15, 1996, 3:00 p.m., at Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church with the Reverend J. Harris Stephens officiating. HILL, James Andrew Jr., 82, of Glasgow, formerly a life-long resident of the Arnolds Valley Community, died Sunday, June 9, 1996, in Stonewall Jackson Hospital. He was born on May 24, 1914, in Rockbridge County, a son of the late James A. Hill Sr. and Eva Frances Watkins Hill. Mr. Hill was a retired owner of the Valley Trading Post in Arnolds Valley and was a member of the Central Baptist Church, Glasgow. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy June Williams Hill; one son and daughter-in-law, William K. ``Sonny'' and Sandy Hill, Radford; two brothers, Grover C. Hill, Natural Bridge Station and Floyd L. Hill, Arnolds Valley; one sister, Helen H. Hayslette, Hueneme, Calif.; six grandchildren, Steve K. and Carrie Ann McCoy, Fredericksburg, Scott A. and Angie Hill, Christiansburg, Jon A. Hill, Johnson City, Tenn., Quinton W. Montgomery, New Bern, N.C., Derrick I. Montgomery, Winston-Salem, N.C., and Victor D. Montgomery, New Bern, N.C.; and three great-grandchildren. HILLERY, Dr. George Anthony Jr., 69, of Newport, died Sunday, June 9, 1996, at Montgomery Regional Hospital. He was born in Abita Springs, La. on May 21, 1927, to the late George A. Hillery Sr. and Juliette Wogan Hillery. Dr. Hillery was the President of the Southern Sociological Society, a long-time member, bible school teacher, Deacon and Elder of the Blacksburg Presbyterian Church, and a very loved father and grandfather. Surviving are one son, Richard O. Hillery, Tampa, Fla.; two daughters, Madeline Hillery Scavo, Columbia, Md., and Pandora Hillery Dove, Newport; three grandchildren, Tanya Scavo Morris and Ryan J. Scavo, both of Columbia, Md., and Jeremiah A. Dove, Newport; one sister, Delilah Fell Hillery Mullins, Slidell, La.; three brothers, Jules Theodore Hillery and Charles Hillery, Slidell, La., and Beauregard Kendall Hillery, New Orleans, La. HUTCHISON, Gerald Thomas, (``Tom''), 38, of 110 Tall Timber Drive, Huddleston, died Saturday, June 8, 1996, in Lynchburg. Born in Fort Wayne, Ind., he was the son of Lily M. Colby Hutchison of Huddleston, and the late Mahlon Hutchison Jr. He was a member of Quaker Memorial Presbyterian Church. In addition to his mother he is survived by a brother, Mahlon G. Hutchison of Raleigh, N.C. A funeral service will be held Tuesday, June 11, 1996, at 11 a.m., in Quaker Memorial Presbyterian Church with Rev. Bernard K. Bangley and Rev. James G. Thompson officiating. Interment will be later in Fort Wayne, Ind. Jim leaves behind one son, Steven Eisenberg, of Richmond, Kathryn Main Neese of Roanoke; his mother and stepfather, Helen and William Talbott, of Glasgow; one sister and husband, Kaye and Barry Henderson; two brothers, Vernon & Joni Neese and Greg & Rickie Neese, all of Roanoke. Also surviving are his four nieces, Amanda & Alicia Neese, Brooke and Blaire Henderson, and nephews, Barrette Henderson and Dylan Keith Neese. He loved each of them dearly. PAUPE, Mary Anne, 19, of Pearisburg, died Sunday night, June 9, 1996, at her home. Mary Anne was born on April 23, 1977, and was a daughter of the late Donald E. and Joy Jackson Paupe. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her grandfather, Lonnie J. Jackson. Mary Anne was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Pearisburg, a 1995 graduate of Giles High School, a sophomore at Virginia Tech, and an active member of the Young Life Christian Organization at Virginia Tech. She is survived by two sisters and brothers-in-law, Michael and Carla Diehl of Cumberland, Md., Clinton and Stephanie Perdue of Pearisburg. SHEPHERD, Joyce Johnson, 68, of Glasgow, died Sunday, June 9, 1996, in Stonewall Jackson Hospital. Mrs. Shepherd was born January 14, 1928, in Rockbridge County, a daughter of Ada Creasy Johnson of Glasgow and the late Charles Glenn Johnson. She was the widow of Elgin Ambrose Shepherd. She was a member of Glasgow Presbyterian Church, where she served as Sunday school superintendent. Mrs. Shepherd was a retired teacher's aide for the Rockbridge County School System. She also was a member of Rockbridge Woman's Club and the local AARP chapter. In addition to her mother, she is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, E. G. and Betsy Shepherd of Natural Bridge Station; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Charles G. and Virginia Johnson of Roanoke and Sam M. and Betty Johnson of Buena Vista; a sister and brother-in-law, Jean B. and George Atkins of Glasgow; four grandchildren, Katie, Matthew, Will and Ann Shepherd, and several special nieces and nephews. WERTZ, Virginia Blanche Johnson, of Norfolk and formerly of Roanoke, died Saturday, June 8, 1996. Graveside service will be Tuesday 10 a.m. in Evergreen Burial Park. Oakey's Roanoke Chapel handling funeral arrangements.
WILLIAMS, Franklin Eugene Sr., 62, of Buena Vista, died Sunday, June 9, 1996, at the Stonewall Jackson Hospital. Born April 22, 1934, in Lancaster, S.C., he was the son of the late Thomas Clarence and Maude Barton Williams. Before retiring, he was the Director of Tech Services at Burlington Ind., Lees Carpet Plant. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and a member of the Buena Vista Presbyterian Church. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Butler Williams of Buena Vista; three sons, F. Eugene Williams Jr. of Macon, Ga., Timothy M. Williams and wife, Terri, of Grand Island, Neb., and Jeffrey B. Williams of Saratoga Springs, N.Y.; a grandson, Dylan N. Williams; two sisters, Almetta Carter of Lancaster, S.C., and Inez Musselwhite of St. George, S.C., a brother, James M. Williams of Lancaster, S.C., The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 12, 1996, at the Lomax Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Rebekah Maul officiating. Interment will be in the Douglas Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Lancaster, S.C. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Lomax Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Buena Vista Rescue Squad.
WISE, Amelia Rowena, 71, of Natural Bridge, died Sunday, June 9, 1996, at her home. Mrs. Wise was born January 12, 1925, in Pennsylvania, a daughter of the late Tony Fair and Rose Buffer Fair. She was a member of the Catholic Church. Surviving are her husband, Franklin R. Wise, Natural Bridge; daughter, Pamela F. Wise, Ch ino, Calif.; son, F. Allan Wise, Chino, Calif.; sister, Irene Rose Baldesari, Accokeek, Md.; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted 10 a.m. Thursday, June 13, 1996, at the Harrison Funeral Chapel with Father N. Alan Lipscomb officiating. Burial will be in the Stonewall Jackson Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials should be made to the Rockbridge Area Hospice, P.O. Box 948, Lexington, Va. 24450. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Harrison Funeral Home, Lexington
