The value of building permits in the Roanoke Valley was down 3.99 percent in May compared with a year earlier, even though the number of permits issued remained just about even with the prior month and the prior year.
Permits for new construction issued in May tended to be a large collection of small projects.
The largest permit was for $1.15 million for the Federal Express terminal near Roanoke Regional Airport. Roanoke's total value for new building permits was $4,730,018. Roanoke County issued $3,259,893, including permits for 39 single-family homes. Salem issued $1,086,814, mostly for alterations and additions to homes.
