PULASKI PLAYGROUND PROJECT MOVES FORWARD

A drawing to determine winners in a raffle raising money to build a playground on Pulaski YMCA property is set for July 4.

The event will be part of the Pulaski County Fairgrounds activities sponsored by WPSK-107.1 radio and Columbia Pulaski Community Hospital.

The playground project took another step forward recently with a visit by Kelly Hayes, a representative of Leathers & Associates of Ithica, N.Y., to view the playground site and start drawing up plans.

Leathers has overseen the construction of community playgrounds in Blacksburg, Wytheville and Tazewell recently, with another on the drawing boards in Richlands. The company provides materials and volunteers supply the labor.

"It basically comes down to people and money," Hayes said.

She estimated that 20 volunteers per shift would be needed to assemble the various playground facilities, which are chosen in part by youngsters in school gatherings. "That's what they do. They just come out and put this thing together."

The proposed site is inside the YMCA's one-third-mile walking and jogging track behind its building. Several businesses and industries have made donations to the project.

More donations have been made in the form of raffle prizes, with $1 tickets on sale at the YMCA, Community National Bank and elsewhere. The prizes include a curio cabinet from Heilig-Meyers, a photo session by Livingston-Smith Photography, an oil change by Pulaski Motors, movies from Frank's Video, comic books from L.T.'s Cards, and a one-month health membership at the YMCA.
