In May, the Christiansburg Police's color guard earned two awards during the Second Annual Honor Guard Competitions in Stafford County.
The seven officers earned second place for presentation for which judges scored the group's marching movements.
The officers also earned a third place for uniform and equipment inspection.
Lt. Gary Brumfield, color guard commander, said the group competed with seven other color guards, two of which are full-time organizations. The U.S. Secret Service guard, one of the full-time groups, took first place in presentation.
Members of the Christiansburg guard are: Investigator Curtis Brown, and officers Andy Schack, Dalton Reid, Kevin Darden, Todd Miller and Derek Altizer.
Christiansburg's guard was established in 1992 and this is the second year it has competed in the competition whose proceeds benefit the Special Olympics, Brumfield said.
The New River Valley unit of the National Association of Social Workers has named Dr. Robert Hendrickson of Radford, the 1996 Social Worker of the Year. Hendrickson, a mental health therapist at St. Albans Hospital in Radford, has been a mental health provider for more than 25 years. He has also served as a teacher, therapist, advocate and role model for social workers in the region. The director of New River Community Action, Terry Smusz, of Blacksburg, was awarded the 1996 Public Citizen of the Year for her work to improve services to at-risk families and children in the New River Valley.
Leslie Roberts Gregg, a local artist, has been selected be a featured artist in a fall issue of the national artist magazine, Topia. Gregg does fine art portraiture as well as free lance work in biomedical illustration.
The Blacksburg Junior Women's Club's Antique Sale and Quilt Show was held on April 12-14 at the Blacksburg Community Center. Kay Hansen, of Roanoke, won Best in Show for her applique quilt. Judy Albert, of Wytheville, won the Viewer's Choice award for her pieced Lone Star quilt. First place winners were: Applique, Judy Albert and Louise Akers, Christianburg; Baby/Juvenile, Joanne Weyers, Blacksburg; Heirloom, June Oxer Kerss, Wytheville and Mary Wilson, Christiansburg; Novelty, Ann Vaughn, Christiansburg; Made by Children, Elizabeth Kraterfield, Roanoke; Group Quilt, Susie Marion and Teri Hoover, both of Blacksburg; Pieced Work, Judy Albert; Wallhanging, Diane Galinaitis, Blacksburg, Ann Reardon, Eggleston, Margaret Yates, Wythevillle, and Layel Zelazny, Blacksburg; Wholecloth, Layel Zelazny; Garment, Ann Reardon.
In April, YMCA Student Programs recognized Virginia Tech students Laura Kaulback, Gretchen Welborn, and Amy Brodeur for two years of service as community service program leaders. Angel Osborne received a regional YMCA Leadership Award.
In April, The Golden Triangle Club of the Bell Atlantic Telephone Pioneers was recognized as Volunteer Group of the Year. The club has 280 retired and active members. Susan Allen, the wife of Governer Allen, presented the award at a state-sponsored volunteer recognition luncheon. The club was nominated by the Southwestern Virginia Training Center in Hillsville for time spent with 35 residents. SWVTC is a facility for severely retarded people of all ages.
The 1996 Needlework Exhibit was held on April 27, 1996, at the Christiansburg National Guard Armory. Winners by category were: Crocheting, Louise Epperly for "Barbie Dress"; Cross-stitch, Dean Gordon for "Nantucket Rose"; Needlepoint, Kathy Martin for "Sill & Metal Purple Threads"; Knitting, Doris Abraham for "Cables and Bobbles Afghan", and Antique, Kathy Martin for "80-Year-Old Framed Piece."
So far this year, members of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) of Virginia Tech donated over 200 pints of blood to the American Red Cross.
Sandy Meyers, American Red Cross Coordinator for the New River Valley said, "If it were not for the ROTC's participation in January and April, we would not have met our quota for the entire region."
The goal of the ROTCs at Virginia Tech is to prepare midshipmen and cadets to serve as officers in the U.S. Military.
In May, members of the Southside Garden Club attended the annual Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs Convention in Abingdon. The club received the Senior State Award for Historic Preservation for Smithfield Plantation's holiday decorations; an honorable mention for the Bird Appreciation Award; an honorable mention for Roadside Improvement Award for the club's participation in Broomin' and Bloomin, a local cleanup effort. Annie Cannell, Blacksburg, won the Best Slide Program Award for the South Atlantic Region for a presentation on heathers.
In April, The Council for Exceptional Children recognized the following people for contributions to the programming for education of children with disabilities in local schools. The Council for Exceptional Children is a national, professional organization serving professionals, exceptional children and their families.
Amy Greer-Knowles, Karen McGraw, Lynn Everett, Sarah Funk, Beth Cross, Mary Henderson, Dale Ryder, Adrienne Ryder, Peggy Plum, and Diane Rapp were recognized.
Ellen Shankin, of Floyd, won the Eagle Design award for her ceramics at the 14th annual Smithsonian Craft Show held April 24-28 at the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C.
