Carilion Radford Community Hospital and the city of Radford have something that no other city in Virginia has - a contract for ambulance services.
Since 1988, the city has contracted four ambulances and one emergency medical service vehicle to the hospital, said Bob Lloyd, Radford assistant city manager. The city pays for the vehicles and equipment, and the hospital periodically reimburses Radford with a sum of the revenues collected from individual use of the ambulances.
"The revenues collected help to reimburse some of the expenditures," Lloyd said. "The city probably pays between 35 and 40 percent of the [ambulances'] operating costs."
On Tuesday morning, the hospital presented the city with a $100,000 reimbursement, which was a larger sum than usual because it was collected over a longer period of time, said Virginia Ousley, Carilion Radford Community Hospital director.
The hospital has been reimbursing the city periodically and hopes eventually to do it on a quarterly basis, she added.
"The project was started so we could provide quality quick services to the citizens, and we have," Ousley said. "It really has been a great success story for emergency medical services."
