IN SCHOOL

SUE HODGE, fourth-grade teacher at Oak Grove Elementary School, has been named Roanoke County's Teacher of the Year.

ADRIAN HOPPER, fifth-grade teacher at Clearbrook Elementary School, has been named Outstanding Teacher of the Year by the Scottish Rite Masons.

DEBORAH BEIRNE, fifth-grade teacher at W.E. Cundiff Elementary School, has been selected as the 1995-96 Sallie Mae Teacher of the Year for Roanoke County Schools. This award is given annually to an outstanding first-year teacher.

WILLIE WAKER, principal of Roanoke County Career Center, has been named the Salem-Roanoke County Chamber of Commerce Educator of the Year.

GAMMA ALPHA CHAPTER OF OMEGA PSI PHI FRATERNITY INC. held its annual Talent Hunt program in March at the YMCA Family Youth Center on Orange Avenue. This year the program was held jointly with the Rho Iota Chapter of Danville. The National Talent Hunt will be held in Los Angeles, Calif.; winners in the district competitions will compete there.

The winner was Shana Waller. Waller, daughter of Thomas and Janis Waller, attends Patrick Henry High School and Roanoke Valley Governor's School for Mathematics and Science. She won first place for her portrayal of Harriet Tubman in a monologue.

Kianna Price, daughter of Charles and Anita Price, was first runner-up in voice and will perform at the district competition if the first-place contestant is unable to perform. Price, an alto singer, performed "Vision of a Sunset," composed by Shawn Stockman. Hill is a senior at Patrick Henry High School.

Renea M. Hill, daughter of Debra Hill, was second runner-up. Hill performed "Amazing Grace," composed by John Newton, on the piano. Hill also is a senior at Patrick Henry High School.

The members of the local Talent Hunt program are Robert Sparrow, Chairman; Bill Board; John Brown; Ernest Garner; William Keen; Joseph Sparrow; H.P. Dunlap, western area supervisor, and Ron Hairston, assistant area supervisor/Rho Iota chapter.. The judges for the program were Frances Keen, Edith Morgan and Stephanie Swain.

ROANOKE BRANCH OF THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF UNIVERSITY WOMEN awarded its annual scholarship at the May meeting. This year's recipient is Anh Nguyen, a senior at Salem High School, who will attend Virginia Western Community College this fall.

The Roanoke branch also recognized its oldest member, Martha Bell. Bell, a longtime AAUW member and retired schoolteacher, turned 102 in February.

In its March meeting, the AAUW announced that Susan Kennedy, calculus teacher at the Roanoke Valley Governor's School for Science and Technology, is the Roanoke AAUW Teacher of the Year for 1995-1996. Kennedy was also named Virginia AAUW State Teacher of the Year for 1995-1996 at the state AAUW Convention in Richmond. Kennedy was recognized as a positive role model for the girls in her classroom, and for her encouragement of girls' achievement in math, science, and technology.

DANNY RAYMER AND AARON WALKER, students at Salem High School, won first place in the state finals of the Ford/AAA Student Auto Skills National Quality Care Challenge, held May 11, in Richmond. Raymer and Walker will represent Virginia in the national finals on June 17, in Washington, D.C.

Contestants for the state finals were selected via a written examination on automotive service. The state finals matched two-person teams in a timed competition to diagnose and repair an intentionally "bugged" 1996 Ford Contour.

In addition to advancing to national competition, Raymer and Walker will receive full scholarships to Ford's ASSET (Automotive Service Education Training) program, which includes instruction in automotive service and a paid apprenticeship at a Ford or Lincoln-Mercury dealership.

NORFOLK SOUTHERN CORP. recently awarded scholarships to two Roanoke Valley students at its annual scholarship luncheon. The students are sons or daughters of Norfolk Southern employees or retirees.

Ailee R. Steele, daughter of Gerald R. and Anna Steele, was a recipient of a Norfolk Southern Special Scholarship. Steele is a student at Northside High School. Brian C. Simpson, son of Johnny W. and Pamela Simpson, was a recipient of an Achievement Scholarship. Simpson also attends Northside High School.

KRISTA TOLLEY, a ninth grade student at William Fleming High School, won first place in the state level of the Parent, Teacher, and Student Association (PTSA) Reflections competition, in the area of photography.

The 1995-96 Reflections theme was "Just open your eyes and see..." Tolley completed the theme statement with "Just open your eyes and see how a nation as great as ours could allow children to be abused and neglected." Tolley is now eligible for national level competition.

MONA CANCINO, daughter of Juanita Mazzawi, is the winner of the Richard E. Morgan Sons of the American Revolution Essay Contest. Cancino, a student at William Fleming High School, will receive a $100 U.S. Savings Bond as an award for her essay.
