SCHOOL BOARD APPROVES OFFICE BUILDING CHANGES

Salem school administrative offices will have a new home as early as next spring, with the School Board's approval of a conceptual plan to move into the former Roanoke County Health Department office off College Avenue.

School administrative offices are currently in the former Salem City Hall building across from the old county courthouse on College Avenue. And some offices, including the schools' parent resource center, are on Union Street.

The new administration complex, about 14,000 square feet with a 2,000-square-foot addition for a board and conference room, will be able to house all administration staff, said Michael Bryant, director of administrative services.

More than a year ago, the city purchased the building and the one next to it, which both at one point housed Roanoke County's school administration staff. After the county schools moved their headquarters, the county Health Department moved in.

The city has a contract with the county to pay $600,000 over three years for the two buildings at College and Fourth Street.

Salem will deed the smaller, newer building to the School Board, said School Superintendent Wayne Tripp. The city may use the older building for storage, he said.

The building that the School Board is currently in will be deeded back to the city, Tripp said.

In other action, the School Board approved a joint nursing program between Salem High School and Virginia Western Community College. The program will allow students to effectively complete their first year of a two-year nursing program during their senior year of high school. Students will complete 20 hours of college credit during their senior year at Salem High and finish the program with 30 hours of credit at Virginia Western.
