SPOON-FED RIVERDAWGS BEAT KICKERS

Former Radford University star Ian Spooner scored three goals as the Roanoke RiverDawgs defeated the Richmond Kickers 4-2 in a United States Interregional Soccer League game at Cave Spring Junior High School on Wednesday night.

Richmond led 1-0 before Spooner scored seven minutes into the second half to tie it. Ben McNight put Richmond ahead 2-1, but Spooner tied the score again. Jeff Knittel picked up the winning goal 22 minutes into the half, and Spooner added a late insurance goal.

Goalie Sasha Drouin (1-0) had five saves for the RiverDawgs.

``We were able to find Spoon as a target throughout the game,'' said Ed McMichael, the RiverDawgs' coach. ``He helped out with pressure defensively and he scored three goals. All in a day's work for Spoon.''

Jim Hall has been hired as Patrick County High School's football coach.

Patrick County, a former Timesland school that re-enters this fall when the six Piedmont District schools go to Region IV as a league, was coached the past two years by Addison Kendrick. His team reached the Region III playoffs for the first time in school history in 1994, but Kendrick resigned this spring.

Hall was the defensive coordinator at Fieldale-Collinsville this past fall after serving as head coach at Bassett in 1994. The Bengals made the Region III Division 3 playoffs under Hall.

This will be the third head-coaching job for Hall, who was at Bishop Ireton in Alexandria for two years and at Washington & Lee-Montross for two years. He was a graduate assistant coach at Grambling State and a part-time assistant at Tennessee.

``They've made a very strong commitment here and built this program,'' Hall said of Patrick County. ``This is a good program and it appears to be a perfect fit for me. Their philosophy is the same as mine.''

The Cougars' schedule won't be easy as they open with Liberty, which went 9-2 last year to make the Region III Division 4 playoffs for the first time in school history. Also on the non-district schedule is defending Group AA DIvision 3 state champion Graham.

Julie Myers, who led the Virginia women's lacrosse team to the championship game of the NCAA tournament as the Cavaliers' interim head coach, was given the job on a full-time basis. Myers was appointed as interim coach Oct.5 after Jane Miller resigned to concentrate on administrative duties. UVa finished 14-4 and reached the NCAA final before falling to top-ranked Maryland.
